Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendera Temple EG007125jhp Dendara Dendarah temple Nile Egypt hieroglyphs wall carving spotlight sun in this beautiful mainly Ptolemaic and Roman structure although the site extends back into the earliest periods of Egyptian existence and it is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. Walking around the many darkly lit passages and rooms there are occasional gems like this where a hole in the ceiling or wall lets a spotlight of sunshine highlight just one part of the elaborately carved and decorated walls. Abydos Hypostyle Hall Sunbeam 5350EG07JHP Abydos Temple Hypostyle Hall Interior Photo Sun beams rays dark, in the largest royal monument built in white limestone, situated at the most important and one of the oldest necropolis of ancient Egypt is the home of Osiris and the Temple of Seti/Sety 1 and added to by Ramses 11 and here in the hypsotyle hall is an atmospheric scene albeit caused by hole in the roof but would have given a sense of the dark solitude only lit by light from the ancient window in the far distance. There are other quarries and two in the South Quarry area have an unfinished colossus while another has an unfinished sarcophagus. These remains of regularly cut holes are probably dating from Ptolemaic and Roman times when copper and iron tools were used, hundreds of year after the unfinished obelisk was abandoned. It is most interesting because of its sheer scale which, if completed, would have been one of the largest ever cut out but it gives an idea of the techniques used to extract these monsters. Diorite, a very hard mineral stone was used as hammer balls to pound the granite and on either side of this obelisk can be seen deep gullies with bowled floors showing the depth penetrated. This obelisk is thought to have been abandoned when a fracture occurred near the top. Around the area are the remains of other stone quarrying as illustrated in this photo showing how holes were cut in the rock in a series of runs that allowed fractures to occur possibly using a variant on the ‘feather and plug’ method removing the blocks of pink granite to be removed but from a much later period. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. As you walk into the temple you pass these cliff on the righthand side dotted with cliff tombs and criss crossed with dankey tracks and paths now many used by the security forces watching over this infamous site after the 1997 massacre. Looking up into the ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall, its lintels and the papyriform painted open bell shaped capitals still showing original colour. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheel obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. Hawara Pyramid eg013112jhp Hawara Faiyum Amenemhet pyramid hidden entrance hole buried ground diagram sand, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty, Middle Kingdom, by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core which still stands dominant and substantial but the limestone covering of Tura Limestone is now all missing. The entrance on the south side is visible but the high ground water table means it is flooded as are all the lower chamber areas. It is most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains except for a large area of sandy mounds and hollows divided by a canal; new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems it appears unfinished at the time of his death c1797BC. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Abu Rawash Pyramid eg076755jhp Egypt Abu Rowash pyramid Djedefre platfrom inclined inspection hole boundary this site is situated north west of Giza this site on high ground near the village of Abu Rawash and has the remains of a pyramid ascribed to the Pharaoh Djedefre, the successor to Khufu both of the 4th Dynasty around 2500BC. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Access to Senusret’s pyramid is through a local village and agricultural land at the edge of the desert escarpment as is common with most of the pyramid sites south of Giza. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. The pyramid has almost totally collapsed into a huge sandy mound but there were still one section of limestone casing intact and not plundered and around the site were hints at its previous enclosure wall structure with large sections of eroded limestone sticking out of the sand like a whales skeleton. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. There is evidence of nine subsidiary pyramids for royal ladies and mastaba tombs around the site including those of Vizier Mentuhotep, Senwosret-ankh. Bent Pyramid Dashur eg961314jhp Egypt Dahshur Bent Pyramid Snefru burial limestone casing west side entrance hole is visible center top above plundered area of casing. The bent Pyramid is famous for its very distinct shape with a reduced slope created mid way up, possibly because of the need to complete the construction earlier than expected or its was structurally unsound. It is the most complete pyramid with most of its Tura limestone cladding intact, although some corners and near the top have been plundered but offer a good indicator of how the Giza pyramids would have looked when completed. Near the pyramid on its south side is a subsidiary one, badly degraded, which was found to have not been used and is felt to be too small for the King’s Queen Hetepheres. When I visited the site in 1995, the same year the military allowed tourist visits, the north entrance, there are two, was reached by climbing up the outside of the structure assisted by the helpful guide but I was unable to reach the burial chamber as I did not trust the rope ladder available. Nearby are several other pyramids of which the North or Red Pyramid also of Sneferu [Old Kingdom, 4th Dynasty c2613-2494BC] is the older, largest and most intact. The others of much poorer quality are from the Middle Kingdom 12th Dynasty some 600 years later. Abu Ghurab Alabaster Bowl EG02AA11jhp Egypt Abu Ghurob Sun Temple Niuserre alabaster bowl draining hole isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Hawara Tomb Shaft 6422EG07JHP Hawara Tomb Shaft Burial Deep Hole Excavated Empty Oblong Sand, near Faiyum, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core with limestone covering, now all missing. Most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems. This photograph shows some of the excavated tomb shafts near the pyramid some dating back to 3000BC and artifacts from these were once on show in the Karanis[Kom Aushim] Museum, now closed. Philae Temple EG204529jhp Philae Temple Egypt granite stones construction modern drill holes Aswan island probably modern during the reinstating of the temple which was established late in the history of Egypt being mainly Ptolemaic, eventually closing as a religious site around 550AD and being located on an island had remained remarkably untouched, partly as it was submerged when the Nile flooded after the construction of the first dam. Being relocated onto the Island of Agilkia on the River Nile near Aswan, to save it being flooded permanently after the completion of the High Dam, it is perhaps one of the loveliest and most complete classic Egyptian temples to visit with a peaceful spirituality lacking in many of the land based sites mainly because of being isolated on an island from modern day noise and often being less crowded as less accessible. It also has a very delightful Light and Sound show, partly a walk through to the Sanctuary followed by a sit down session just past the Kiosk of Trajan. Saqqara South Tomb EG051126jhp Egyptian limestone Zoser Saqqara South Tomb entrance flight steps deep hole dating from around 2500BC to the south of Cairo is the earliest stone built monument in Egypt and probably in the world and near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and was designed by Imhotep, one of the greatest minds in ancient Egypt and later deified as a God. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire. Quoich Braemar 191292jhp Quoich Punch Bowl Water hole swirling rocks gorge Deeside Glen Scotland is located east of the Linn of Dee on the North side of the River Dee west of Braemar. Passing another even more spectacular gorge at the Linn of Dee west of Braemar as the road goes deeper into Glen Dee and the Linn is a popular visiting place because of the dangerous and spectacular nature of the river crashing though this narrow cleft in the granite rocks. A public carpark nearby is ideal parking for walkers heading north into the Cairngorms or westwards past the Chest of Dee into Glen Tilt and on to Blair Atholl. From the Linn it is a slightly longer drive taking the metalled road to its end at the Quoich past the back of Mar Lodge to a new National Trust carpark and the main starting point for walks to Beinn A’Bhuird and beyond.
