Karnak Thutmosis Obelisk EG074992jhp Egypt Karnak Amun Temple Sacred Lake Tuthmose obelisk palm trees in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall but the southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake. This lake was originally supplied with water through underground tunnels from the River Nile and would have fluctuated when the river flooded; these days the level remains the same through out the year. Priest’s houses have been found around the area the modern light show sitting is, there was a Nilometer and also an area for introducing the sacred geese. Accessed usually through the Gate of Ramesses 1X but is often approached from the walk back from the Festival Hall of Tuthmosis and the Gate of Nectanebo on the east of the Central Enclosure. Karnak Chapel Thutmosis 1V EG074908jhp Egyptian Karnak Thutmose alabaster Chapel Open Air Museum detail hieroglyphs was one of the original exhibits in the Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the Nile at Luxor. Ruling around 1400BC he is particularly known for the famous Dream Stele between the paws of the Sphinx. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including another of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel of whom little is recorded, who ruled around 1550-24BC and although his mummy was found in the 1881 royal mummy cache but this beautiful small chapel is one delightful reminder of his 25 year reign. There is the exquisite White Chapel of Senwosret 1, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Deir el-Medina EG075177jhp Deir al-Madinah Egypt Great pit pile shards broken pots ostraka hut is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets, temples and chapels. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Most photographs show the streets, houses, interior with domestic bowls and grinding querns and others a general overview of the village with its tombs and rock tombs to the North West corner. There are also some exquisitely decorated underground tombs of which a couple are included in the entrance ticket. This photo includes the Great Pit, a 60 metre deep excavated hole to access ground water, possibly dug during Graeco-Roman times to save the burdensome carrying of water from sources nearer the Nile. There is the remain of a small building, mudbrick and mud lined, attributed to Roman origin and huge piles of broken shards from drinking pots, urns and other earthenware pottery vessels used for the possible carrying and retention of water, some designs are plain while others have patterns. However there is a suggestion that water was never found either in the Ramasseid period when first attempts are thought to have started and even in the later Ptolemaic times. It did however serve in latter years as a huge tip from which large quantities of ostraka where recovered giving detailed insights to the daily life and skills of the workmen in the nearby village. From the Great Pit are open views eastwards past the Ramasseum, across the fertile agricultural area of the West Bank to the distant pylons of Karnak Temple. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. In this case the unique and earliest stone built tomb, the Step Pyramid of King Djoser from 2500BC, the first experiment of the later true pyramid style is seen here towering above the fertile farming land that runs alongside the whole journey from Cairo. This photo is below the cliff path from the village of St Cyrus nearest to the Church with some late autumn colour and is one of two routes down to the beach. However these are substantial structures and a new one was identified in addition to those originally identified and modern techniques such as drone have allowed a more accurate overview of the area to be made and further modern soil and plant life analysis has added to the overall knowledge of the site and this period of man’s early Deeside history. Nearby is of course the very spectacular Bronze Age hilltop Recumbent Stone Circle at Tomnaverie excavated and partially restored by Reading University over two seasons in 1999 and 2000. Bridge Alvah Geese TO436660JHP The Bridge of Alvah spanning the River Deveron with a single arch some 60 feet above the water was built in 1772 part of a private transport initiative by the landowners of the nearby Duff House in Banff. It is no longer used as a bridge but is a very attractive visitor feature and a peaceful two mile walk from Duff House in Banff, an beautiful Georgian baroque mansion open for viewing its restored interior and along with its children’s play area, golf course and extensive woodland walks. One of earliest photos was a dawn shot of the River with a silhouette of a fishing hut on the north bank but on this visit I found only the foundations were left. The river is a famous salmon fishing water which flows from the Cairngorms eastwards into the North Sea at Aberdeen and this view is at the eastern end of the town looking back towards Scolty Hill adjacent to the terminus of the Deeside Railway from Milton. One of earliest photos was a dawn shot of the River with a silhouette of a fishing hut on the north bank but on this visit I found only the foundations were left.
