Migvie Cross Slab jkl9308jhp Migvie Stone Cross-slab Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands in the kirkyard of Migvie Church and is easily accessible for the casual visitor. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on gneiss stone, 2 metres high, similar to that at Kinord but held to be of inferior quality. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. There are also iconic symbols carved into the angles of the cross, namely horseshoe, V-rod, double disc, Z-rod and a pair of shears as well as a horse and rider. Turriff Summer Kirk VR0371JHP Turriff Old Kirk Knights Templar Buchan Aberdeenshire Scottish photograph is an ancient town mentioned in the 6th century with Pictish connections, with a later church built by the Knights Templar illustrated in this photo, as a main centre for the Covenanter Rebellion in 1639 and more recently conflict with Lloyd George’s National Health Insurance Scheme in 1913 and the creation of the Turra Coo. Today hosts one of the largest agricultural shows in Britain and remains a thriving farming town in the north of Aberdeenshire. The Church of St Nathalan dating from the late 1700’s possibly on an early site founded in 450AD by St Nathalan with records from the 12th Century indicating ownership to Arbroath Abbey. In the grounds is a mort house. About ¼ mile to the south was the location of Coull Castle, a substantial fortress in the early 13th Century, of which nothing remains today. Continuing up the single lane road northwards brings you to the Slack of Tillylodge and the Queen’s viewpoint with spectacular views over Deeside towards Morven and the distant outline of Lochnagar Britain’s fourth highest mountain. They were saved thus from the clutches of Cromwell’s troops in 1652 during the siege of the castle when his troops were attacking the Scottish Royalist troops loyal to Charles 11. The current church was rebuilt in 1738 on the site of the original one consecrated in 1242. The North aisle and staircase were added in 1876. The bell dates from 1679 and came from Rotterdam. 17th century wall tablets in the church commemorate Sir George Ogilvy of Barras who was Governor of Dunnottar Castle during the siege and who organised the smuggling of the regalia out of the castle. On a personal note, I had the privilege of photographing a re-enactment of what is thought to be how it was done for the current coloured version of the Dunnottar Castle Guidebook. St Mary s Auchindour Kirk WTN1861JHP St Mary's Church Scotland Tombstones Shadows Trees Grass Moss Cemetery Aberdeenshire is situated by the Cabrach road and reached by taking first left turning after Lumsden on road to Rhynie and Huntly in North East Aberdeenshire near Morayshire. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with this fine Scottish medieval door and has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. Next to it is spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees.
