Aurora over Scotland (11 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Urban Aurora au74015jhp Scotland Aurora display rays folding arc waning Deeside rooftops shed Aberdeenshire taken over Banchory itself and was active between 1.30 and 2am on the 11th April, 1990. This display was an hour or so after an earlier display which I photographed at The Neuk between 10.40 and 11.30pm on the 10th. This display developed from pulsating patches of light which I noticed from my house on Station Road next to the East Church Manse around 1 to 1.15am BST and which developed into a full blown arc with very strong rays. What cannot be recorded is the amount of movement of the rays especially when tracking right to left but here creates the curtain like effect with the arc folding to create a horseshoe shape. In the photos the blue colour is of lower level nitrogen gas excitation and with a hint of purple towards the end of the display as against the more common occurrence of red and green oxygen gas. Some of the colour is muted as there was a full moon, the light of which is evident in the brightness of the houses as well as the colour from tungsten lamps from street lights. Of humorous interest is the appearance on bathroom lights while I was photographing in two adjacent houses and neither of the occupants knew a display was underway when I enquired afterwards. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy all day and as in this photo during the cool of the evening and it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Alexandria Railway Station eg9614115jhp Egypt Egyptian Alexandria city railway station Misr Masr oldest stylish modern Mediterranean coast city is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. This photo is of the Railway Station “mahatit masr”, originating from the late 1850’s when the first Egyptian railway line was made to Cairo by Robert Stephenson. The original building has been refurbished after this photo was taken, part of a quick stop from the taxi as I drove around the City on a day trip. A few isolated ancient sites can be visited with some Greco-Roman ruins and archaeology. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Aberdeen Xmas Gardens up767786jhp Aberdeen Gardens Christmas Xmas lights trees dark winter Union Terrace all located in the centre of the Aberdeen and with the famous Bon Accord floral coat-of arms on the face of the bank in the Gardens beneath the background terraces offers unique public space landscaped on a natural gorge. This is an older photo from 2007 but I think was better for viewing the Xmas lights whereas in recent years an ice rink and now a large shopping precinct has destroyed the quiet ambience of the park. Known affectionately as “ Education, Salvation and Damnation” three classical Aberdeen silver granite buildings facing Rosemount Viaduct off a grand backdrop – the City Library, St Mark’s domed Church and HM Theatre now of course with its very modern addition of box office and restaurant and here photographed from the famous Union Bridge on Union Street. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. Huntly Castle Scotland TO3367467JHP Huntly Castle Front Roadside Lamp-post Palace Aberdeenshire Historic Scotland, the present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the River Deveron near its joining the Bogie at Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is a few yards from the entrance and ticket office and is accessed passing through the centre of Huntly and past the Gordon School. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
