This view is taken from the main top deck of the Eastmar RA11 which was the Egyptian end of the Kuoni package tours which at that time had a berth near the city centre. It was my first trip to Egypt in September 1994 and we had left Edfu after spending nearly a whole morning berthed after the temple trip because of gale force winds and rain storms and the journey south to Kom Ombo was decidedly uncomfortable at times. Arriving in Aswan to blue skies and glorious sunshine was a huge relief and sitting by the pool swept all those grey feelings away. Aswan Aga Khan EG949027jhp Egyptian Aswan river Nile Aga Khan Mausoleum start steps elegant beautiful and a visit is often a part of a trip to visit an exhibition Nubian Village passed by boats travelling to the cataract islands such as Seheil or on the traditional afternoon sail offered in most tour packages and one route for those visiting the Monastery of St Simeon. What is also important is the close awareness of the inhospitable nature of the cataracts, now benign because of the impact of the two dams across the river, but imagining these huge rocks in a Nile inundation and one could understand the barrier that it created for those travellers trying to head further south by boat. The Mausoleum is for the Third Aga Khan who died in 1957 built by his widow his Begum or former wife and is in solid marble. The current Aga Kahn, his grandson Karim, is the leader of the Shi i Sect of Ismaili Muslims. The Tomb is occasionally open but usually a visit entails a climb by steps and apart from a close view of this beautiful building offers wonderful view over Aswan and the River Nile. Taking a ferry over and paying for a museum and island visit is straight forward. This photo was taken in 2000 when restoration and excavation was ongoing and is record of progress at that time. It is also interesting to visit the famous Nilometer which was used for recording the start of the annual flooding of the Nile or inundation. The Nilometer is situated directly across from the equally famous Old Nile Cataract Hotel, written about in Agatha Christie’s Death on the Nile and which featured in the film of the same name. The island would have had strategic importance given its size and predominant position in the centre of the river. There are the remains of several Temples to various Gods associated with the Island, the most notable being Khnum, the ram-headed provincial God of the region, Lord of the Cataract and Hapy, the Nile God. Khnum’s consorts were Satet/Satis and Anuket. Pre-historic remains and carvings have been found and occupation of the Island spanned almost the whole history to Egypt including a gateway showing Alexander 11 and Greco-Roman Necropolis of the Sacred Rams. Considerable occupation of the Island by high officials is evidenced by the spread of houses and shown in some of these photos. There is also evidence of a Jewish settlement from Aramaic papyri finds. A small but interesting Museum exhibits finds from all the periods of occupation and is well worth a visit. No photography was allowed. There is also a garden museum with statues of Middle Kingdom local nomarchs. As several of the photos show is partially restored Temple of Satet with some painted relief blocks in place and the areas not found left a drawings showing figures in position. There was evidence of considerable reusing of older buildings particularly by the ruler Nectanebo 11, see also his naos, and later Alexander and two temples attributed to Amenhotep 111 and Tuthmosis 111 that existed at the time of the French expedition in 1800 where subsequently destroyed during civil unrest. Along the promenade are restaurants, berths of cruiseboats, ferry landing areas and to the south the Municipal Gardens, the Coptic Cathedral and the old and new Cataract Hotels, the former of course made famous in the film Death on the Nile. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. It is reckoned to be one of the driest and sunniest locations is Scotland. To the east over the River is the sister fishing town of MacDuff, which remains a busy fishing harbour supporting its own trawler fleet with fishmarket and its excellent facilities expanding for the watersport and pleasure sailing industry.
