Egypt > Fayoum & Desert (1 file)

Pictures in this gallery cover the Fayoum area, Lake Qarun, Karanis, Qasr al-Saghah and Soknopaiou Nesos
Lake Qarum al-Fayyum eg947034jhp
Egypt el-Fayoum Lake Qarun Moeris peaceful quiet lakeshore restaurant was a peaceful coffee stop during hectic visit to The Fayyum [Crocodilopolis Nome] province of Egypt south of Cairo which included visits to Meydum and Hawara pyramids, the waterwheels of Madinat al-Fayyum Town, Lake Qarun and then returning to Cairo via Karanis. Many years later I returned to the Lake and stayed at the historic Auberge Helnan Hotel on its shores before a journey across the desert to Soknopaiou Nesos [Dimyah-al-Siba] and Qasr al-Saghah Temple. The Lake has a long history from Neolithic times but major development started under Amenemhat 1 in the 12th Dynasty with water management and drainage schemes. Very productive area for various crops, wildfowl and fish with increase development during the Ptolemaic and Roman times as it is still to modern days.

Cothiemuir RSC bnm3616jhp
Scotland summer sunny forest Cothiemuir Stone Circle recumbent rear view Keig Aberdeenshire and now the focus for a nearby natural burial site with a spiritual connection going back to Bronze Age times. This ancient Recumbent Stone Circle with altar stone, flankers and some outer monoliths is found deep in the forest off the Keig to Monymusk Road via My Lordís Throat which runs along the southern side of Bennachie. After leaving the main Insch Road [B992] there is a straight followed by a curve to the right round the edge of Cothiemuir Wood. Adjacent to a field looking back to Keig there is enough room to pull off the road on the verge, cross the road and there is an obvious footpath up through the many mature trees and up a gradual slope. The walk into the stone circle takes about five minutes following the footpath which meanders through the trees and past some of the Natural Burial area plots. This is a Historic Scotland protected site, it is not signed and there is no access for wheelchairs.

Loanhead Daviot Recumbent Stone Circle stones monolith Scotland Aberdeenshire photo located near the village of Daviot, west of Inverurie on the B9001 Rothienorman Road. Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face.

South Leylodge Recumbent Flankers Stone Circle Kintore Aberdeenshire bronze Age historic ruined monument in a field [NJ766132] to the North of the dead end slip road signed Lauchintilly off the B977 Dunecht to Kintore Road. Only the flankers and recumbent appear to be left although there are several single standing stones in nearby fields, possibly monoliths from the original RSC but now useful scratching posts for cattle. Also called the South Ley Lodge RSC per Aubrey Burlís book ref No: 98 P353 for his details regarding the site. Ian Shepherd in Exploring Scotlandís Heritage: Grampian suggests on page 145 that it might be an example of a RSC that was only that-the flankers and the recumbent and the rest of the circle was never completed. The point was also made that these stones were the first built as the largest and most important although this idea is somewhat contradicted in later studies made at Tomnaverie where these stones are thought to have been added as the final stage of closing out the monument. Cullerlie Stone Circle Monolith Aberdeenshire Deeside Scootish Historic Site Photo lies west of Aberdeen near Garlogie off the Aberdeen Tarland Road and is Historic Scotland signposted. It is situated on the edge of Leuchar Moss. Excavated in 1934, evidence was found of cremation in a series of kerb cairns and from wood charcoal analysis it is suggested this occurred at different times in history. Dated from 2nd Millennium BC, it is argued it was a later development of the more common Recumbent Stone Circles. Excavated in 1934, evidence was found of cremation in a series of kerb cairns and from wood charcoal analysis it is suggested this occurred at different times in history. Dated from 2nd Millennium BC, it is argued it was a later development of the more common Recumbent Stone Circles. This site is cared for by Historic Scotland and is open to the public with easy access from the nearby public road.
