 Dendara Temple exterior rear ancient Egypt construction mudbrick wall pan bedding photograph is located north of Luxor and survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of the enclosure wall to the east of the main temple showing the scale and construction methods of the ancient egyptian builders with an example of pan bedding, the sloping land contour alignment of the brick layers.

 Dendara Temple Birth House Roman Trajan Hathor Ihy ancient Egyptian located at this home of the Goddess Hathor, north of Luxor surviving as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. The photo is of the Roman birth house or mammisi built by Trajan with some of the finest carvings in Egypt, here with scenes of Hathor suckling her son Ihy and another of him behind her with the King Trajan making offering to her. In the background the mudbrick enclosure wall shows the construction method of pan-bedding used extensively by Egyptian builders.

 Mudbrick enclosure wall pan bedding Karnak temple Egyptian construction Nectanebo attributed as the builder of this surrounding this huge religious temple complex located on the East Bank fo the River Nile at Luxor. Pan bedding was a technique where the bricks mirrored the ground levels and it is also possible to see how additons where made and other areas strengthened as seen towards the top centre. This part of the enclosure wall is at the northern corner and is behind the Open Air Museum.

The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed.

 Lochnagar Deeside Panorama Hillhead Pittenderrich mountain Scotland hill cirrus clouds Aberdeenshire Taken near to the site of a possible stone circle or ring cairn above the farm of Hillhead accessed by Alamein Farm off the Tarland road west from the Queen's View at the Slack. Away in the distance with the same alignment is the hill with the Bronze Age Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle built on it. The excavation site behind this viewpoint is also known as Blackhills although it is located nearer to the farm of Hillhead. Bennachie summit can also be seen from the site and given its height it was a very carefully chosen location.

 Dunnideer Hillfort Panorama Insch Aberdeenshire Scotland Summer Library Photo of this site although the remains now visible were one of the oldest stone castles in Scotland, built around 1260. Situated on one of two hills both of which show evidence of early use as fortified strongholds, they are near Insch in Aberdeenshire. It is accessed by a steep but short climb from a minor road to Clashindarroch Forest and there is a small signed carpark area. Thsi view is taken near Coldhome on the road looking eastwards over Insch that heads and one can cut back to the Pictish Picardy Symbol Stone at Netherton.

 Castle Fraser Autumn Beeches Panorama Scottish Aberdeenshire Photograph National Trust Scotland property dating from between 1575 and 1636 is the “most elaborate z-plan castle” in existence in Scotland today and was the work of two master masons or builders called Bell and Leiper.
The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. This building is situated about 16 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round.  Corgarff Castle Cockbridge roadside view Aberdeenshire Historic Scotland fortified fort just off the A939 Ballater/Tomintoul road with a commanding position over this strategically important route to the north. The core tower was built in 1537 and the most striking star-shaped curtain wall dates from 1748 when occupied by the Hanoverian troops tracking down Jacobite rebels. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation.

As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.

 Kildrummy Castle western Aberdeenshire Den Panorama Historic Scottish property ruined fortress Den view with its roots set during the peak of medieval European castle construction during the early 13th century. Started by Alexander 11 and possibly later extended after a visit by Edward 1 of England in 1296. It survived many sieges, being burnt and later restored, before being largely dismantled after the Jacobite rising of 1715 when used as the headquarters for the Earl of Mar. It is a magnificent ruin and the scale of the thick walls is particularly impressive despite not being as well preserved as many similar English ruins.  Autumnal Castle Fraser Panorama Dramatic Light Blue Sky Round Tower Shadows Grass dates from between 1575 and 1636 is the most elaborate z-plan castle in existence in Scotland today and was the work of two master masons or builders called Bell and Leiper.
The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.
This is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 16 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault; viewed here from above Old Hall Bay to the south looking northwards towards Castle Haven Bay and North Sea coast.

Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
