This panoramic view on the main approach reinforces how this magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill summit to the left and behind are branches of the Valley of the Kings. Ramose Funeral Procession EG5511JHP Ramose Tomb Relief Luxor Egypt Painted Frieze Wall Top Procession Funeral, one of many beautiful tomb decorations amongst the Tombs of the Nobles on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor and this is a funeral procession frieze tucked away in the top left hand corner. Ramose Tomb-Chapel in the Lower Enclosure [Tomb 55] was a Vizier and Governor towards the end of the reign of Amenhotep 111 and beginning of the Amarna period of Akhenaten and this is reflected in the change of style of the reliefs in his tomb. This was the first Tomb of the Nobles I visited in 1994 and I have noticed a fading of the coloured funerary procession frieze in the top left-hand corner since then. The area around the Tombs, especially the approach to Ramose, has now been greatly improved with removal of many of the old modern houses and entry to these fascinating burial sites made more accessible. Tuna el-Gebel Sky 6316EG07JHP Eastern Arabian Desert Sky Clouds Egypt Minya Vista Panoramic Photograph from the necropolis of Tuna el-Gebel is City of the Dead with various chapels, temples and catacombs for animal mummies and many more which are still buried near the Temple of Thoth and unexcavated under the desert sands. The site is centred on the Temple, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheelhouse as illustrated in this photo obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault; viewed here from above Old Hall Bay to the south looking northwards towards Castle Haven Bay and North Sea coast. Grounds are normally open all year round. Viewed here from higher ground and looking towards the distinctive outcrop and vitrified fort on Bennachie. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
Montrose Basin Sunset qax5687jhp Montrose basin Scotland peaceful water sunset clouds colourful panoramic Angus a major town south of Aberdeen in the North East of Scotland which has a developed harbour with oil and offshore renewals support facilities. The harbour has a long history of supporting trade across the North Sea with my own forebears working in the wood shipping trade in the 1800’s. A WW2 airfield of note with contemporary museum, beautiful beach, strong academic history, golf course and many other attractions on offer. The basin at Montrose, a tidal inland lake is rich with bird life especially as a roosting area for geese in the winter months. This view is from the railway station on the main east coast line from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and further south to London.
