The distinct outline is created by the remains of a substantial vitrified stone Pictish fort and is visible from large areas of Aberdeenshire which it strategically overlooks and it is held that the Romans fought the Picts at the battle of Mons Graupius in the nearby area. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. There are also iconic symbols carved into the angles of the cross, namely horseshoe, V-rod, double disc, Z-rod and a pair of shears as well as a horse and rider. Maidenstone East Face asd8362jhp Maiden Stone East face Cross-slab Aberdeenshire Pictish Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands by the roadside near Pitcaple and is easily accessible for the causal visit from a small lay-by carpark. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on pink granite stone and is probably one of the last carved in Grampian. It is so-called after the daughter of a local landowner who died during her elopement.
