This burning of the heather is an annual activity across the Scottish moors and hills allowing short young regenerated heather for easier access for the young grouse. Old heather gets very long, deep and thick and it is impossible for the grouse to eat and get around. On the Cabrach a few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. In the distance eastwards the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort can be seen and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. Famous for its elaborate Sacrament House on the north wall in form of Greek cross with housing for consecrated host, attributed to the Alexander Galloway, Vicar in 1524. Also has distinctive graveslab with carving of armoured knight Gilbert de Greenlaw, killed at battle of Harlaw in 1411 and later reused by a Forbes in 1592. It was unroofed in 1771 and now charming ruin on the northern banks of the River Don. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with this fine Scottish medieval door and has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. Next to it is spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees.
