Aswan Nubian Museum Skeleton EG052935JHP
Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum grave and skeleton dating to prehistory around 35-3000BC and found at Kubanieh, the 2nd Cataract on the River nIle at Aswan. Semi Nomadic tribe buring dead in oval/rectangular pits of a stone structure and including burial goods just as peronal ornaments made of ivory, faience, bone; shells and coloured stones. An exhibit in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons.

Ballater Station Fire xcv7892jhp
Ballater Old Station wooden shell fire destroyed May 2015 Royal Deeside Scottish Aberdeenshire town some 40 miles west of Aberdeen in Aberdeenshire in North East Scotland. The station was opened in 1866 and closed 100 years later in 1966 following the Beeching Cuts. The Station was as far as the Deeside Railway extended from Aberdeen and allowed Queen Victoria easier access to Balmoral Castle than previously travelling overland from Edzell. It was later used by HM Queen Elizabeth on her annual holidays at the Castle until the Station was closed when the railway line was disbanded in 1966.

Unfortunately during the week of 10th May 2015 a fire has all but destroyed the wooden building as can be seen in this photograph, including the Waiting Room Museum, the restaurant area, some small businesses although a replica railway carriage as used by Queen Victoria was saved. The future of the station is uncertain but as a central part of the tourist experience in the town it will be a major loss. Ballater lies to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness.

Butterfly small tortoiseshell colourful rear view blue chevrons buddleia feeding Scotland August summer photograph as they feed and fly eratically between different buddleia bushes and they hardly settle and are moving all the time so awkward to photograph. So far I have counted only a pair of them on my several buddleaias and these are the second brood of the year as the first appear much earlier in the summer. Numbers overall are better this year, 2017, although still down on 20 years ago when 100plus was not unusual. So far this year I have counted over 50 at one time, mainly Peacocks and Red Admirals with a couple of Small Tortoiseshells and one Dark Green Fritillary but some good sunny spells seems to have got them active. One surprise was to find a Golden Ringed Dragonfly hanging from a buddleia early in the morning, no movement of any kind while I photographed it but it had gone 10 mins later when I came out again.

Huntly Castle Aberdeenshire Scotland Front Roadside Trees Shell Ruin Palace, the present manifestation being basically a Palace, is situated on a strategic hillock over looking the River Deveron near its joining the Bogie at Huntly where traces of a motte and bailey stood dating back to the 12th century. The present ruin dates from the 15th century and is adorned with 17th century oriels and armorials. It was the family seat of the Gordon Earl’s of Huntly for much of its chequered history and major player in the history of Scotland from the days of Robert the Bruce to the troubles times of the Covenanter’s.

As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. Elgin Cathedral Moray Highlands Scotland Tombstones Cemetery Ruined Shell was founded in 1224 although a substantial ruin now cared for by Historic Scotland remains one of the most beautiful medieval buildings in Scotland. The transepts with their buttressed west towers and parts of the tall choir and nave date from the fire of 1270 but subsequent destruction especially by the Wolf of Badenoch in 1390 and later further destruction and neglect after the Reformation means we will never see this building in its true majesty.
