This viewpoint is accessed from the Bridge of Alford to Montgarrie and takes you over the Correen Hills by Suie Hill to Clatt and onto the Alford Huntly road near Rhynie. The distinctive shape of the Tap O’Noth hill with its vitrified Pictish fort remains on the top. Knockespock House is the large mansion that lies directly beneath this viewpoint. Maidenstone Stone Bennachie jkl8779jhp Maiden Stone Cross-slab Bennachie summit spring Pictish Christian carved ancient Scottish relic stands by the roadside near Pitcaple and is easily accessible for the causal visit from a small lay-by carpark. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on pink granite stone and is probably one of the last carved in Grampian. It is so-called after the daughter of a local landowner who died during her elopement. During the winter and spring with the trees bare of foliage it is possible to see the summit of Bennachie. This burning of the heather is an annual activity across the Scottish moors and hills allowing short young regenerated heather for easier access for the young grouse. Old heather gets very long, deep and thick and it is impossible for the grouse to eat and get around. On the Cabrach a few ruined crofts or farms can be seen and evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. In the distance eastwards the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort can be seen and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. This photo is taken on the border between Aberdeenshire and Morayshire on the main road between Rhynie and Dufftown. There is a slight rough layby by the roadside allowing access up a grassy path amongst broom and heather. The monument was erected in 1951 by the Deeside Field Club to commemorate the Battle of Corrichie of 1562 between the forces of Mary Queen of Scots lead by the Earl of Moray who beat those led by the Gordon’s of Huntly, in several battles between the Reformation and a possible Catholic resurgence. Inscribed on the stone in Gaelic are “Cuimhnichibh La Coire Fraoichidh” translated as Remember the Day of Corrichie. Although Queen Mary is claimed to have sat and watched the battle she was in fact in Aberdeen and both the ‘Queens Chair’, a granite outcrop on Berry Hill and Queen Mary’s well are probably fictional creations.
