This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx
Egyptian Giza InfR EG020429jhp Giza Egyptian pyramids modern Muslim infra red Khafre tombstones Great pyramid B&W film, an area that lies roughly between the causeway of Menkaure and that of Khafre in which there are many old mastabas and rock cut tombs, some open to the public such as Debhen or Iwn-min and the most prominent of which is the Mastaba of Queen Khentkawes the last major Royal construction in the Giza complex. It is an area left to the individual to explore and has an eerie feel wandering amongst some grotesque eroded faces of limestone showing the natural damage that centuries of wind and blown sand can do to unprotected soft limestone. To the western boundary of this area is a large bluff with the modern Muslim cemetery beneath it captured in this photo. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins. These 18th century houses were sympathetically restored in 1965 and add great character to this iconic part of Old Aberdeen. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. They are still representative of the City despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. The Church of St Nathalan dating from the late 1700’s possibly on an early site founded in 450AD by St Nathalan with records from the 12th Century indicating ownership to Arbroath Abbey. In the grounds is a mort house. About ¼ mile to the south was the location of Coull Castle, a substantial fortress in the early 13th Century, of which nothing remains today. Continuing up the single lane road northwards brings you to the Slack of Tillylodge and the Queen’s viewpoint with spectacular views over Deeside towards Morven and the distant outline of Lochnagar Britain’s fourth highest mountain. Coull Kirkyard qax3744jhp Coull Church parish Deeside Aboyne Aberdeenshire Scotland box design kirkyard located off the Aboyne Tarland Road in the south east corner of Cromar. The Church of St Nathalan dating from the late 1700’s possibly on an early site founded in 450AD by St Nathalan with records from the 12th Century indicating ownership to Arbroath Abbey. In the grounds is a mort house. About ¼ mile to the south was the location of Coull Castle, a substantial fortress in the early 13th Century, of which nothing remains today. Continuing up the single lane road northwards brings you to the Slack of Tillylodge and the Queen’s viewpoint with spectacular views over Deeside towards Morven and the distant outline of Lochnagar Britain’s fourth highest mountain. Old Kinneff Kirk zxc5213jhp Kinneff Old Church autumn sunshine tombstones Mearns Aberdeenshire sea Scotland history Crown Jewels has its famous claim to Scottish History as the hiding place for eight years of the Scottish Regalia spirited away by Mrs Grainger, the Minister wife, from Dunnottar Castle. They were saved thus from the clutches of Cromwell’s troops in 1652 during the siege of the castle when his troops were attacking the Scottish Royalist troops loyal to Charles 11. The current church was rebuilt in 1738 on the site of the original one consecrated in 1242. The North aisle and staircase were added in 1876. The bell dates from 1679 and came from Rotterdam. 17th century wall tablets in the church commemorate Sir George Ogilvy of Barras who was Governor of Dunnottar Castle during the siege and who organised the smuggling of the regalia out of the castle. On a personal note, I had the privilege of photographing a re-enactment of what is thought to be how it was done for the current coloured version of the Dunnottar Castle Guidebook. The bell dates from 1679 and came from Rotterdam. 17th century wall tablets in the church commemorate Sir George Ogilvy of Barras who was Governor of Dunnottar Castle during the siege and who organised the smuggling of the regalia out of the castle. On a personal note, I had the privilege of photographing a re-enactment of what is thought to be how it was done for the current coloured version of the Dunnottar Castle Guidebook.
