Aurora over Scotland (4 files)

Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Crathes Castle au83636jhp British spring Aurora Corona Crathes Castle zenith crown overhead shape pastel colours turrets located at this National Trust for Scotland property near Banchory, west of Aberdeen. Taken on the 25th March 1991 at 00.10hrs UT is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops however this particular film was Fuji P1600 which for a short time was their fastest slide film. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. The photos taken in this March sequence shows the huge scale of a Corona zenith completely overhead with a pastel mix of green and red rays from high level oxygen falling from directly overhead and dropping to the apparent ground level set against the useful scale of the castle. Braemar-Castle-qax8460jhp Braemar Castle fort autumn rainbow wintry larch trees Royal Deeside Scottish was built in 1628 by John Earl of Mar was basically a pitched roof over the main tower and some turrets. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. The sign in the foreground is a message of hope that the Corona Virus pandemic will be beaten. The photo was taken by luck on 21st November, 2020 at around 11.20UT. As a private property now in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle is accessible for exterior viewing all year round with easy parking at nearby carpark but the interiors during summer months at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment. It is located on the Banks of the River Dee in the community of Crathie mid-way between the towns of Ballater and Braemar on the A93. The estate and building are private belonging to Her Majesty the Queen and although open to the public for certain times of the year are not public property. Corse Castle Scotland VN0341JHP Scottish Corse Castle Tower House Fortified Stonebuilt Ruin Turrets Z-Plan is located off B9119 Tarland road-take Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photographs show NW tower but basic structure is a shell with SE tower beyond. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. Given that nearby Craigievar Castle is closed during 2008/9 for restoration this might fill a gap as part of the same family and very much in their historical area of Aberdeenshire. Braemar Castle Scotland VS0970JHP Braemar Castle Military Fort Fortress Highlands Royal Deeside Aberdeenshire Photo view taken of the star-shaped battlements and musket loops situated at the western end of Royal Deeside by the River Dee and now in community ownership. Built in 1628 by John Earl of Mar it was basically a pitched roof over the main tower and some turrets. Later in the 18th century the battlements and unusual star-shaped defensive curtain wall were added. It was forfeited to the crown after the 1715 rebellion and were later sold to the Farquharson’s of Invercauld and rented back to the Crown as a Hanoverian garrison post until 1831. It has a barrel vaulted ceilings, an iron yett, an open wrought iron metal grid, covering an underground dungeon with its bottle neck entrance. Since then it has been a private property until recently by Invercauld Estate and is now run as a tourist attraction by a local community trust after refurbishment with exhibitions reflecting its, and the local area history. As a private property in the control of a local charity then these photographs should only be used for tourist/scenic/editorial purposes. The Castle will be Open again from 3rd May 2008; interior at weekends from 11-4 or by prior appointment. Designed and built by Thomas Telford between 1812-1815, is probably the oldest iron bridge in Scotland and has a single span of 150 feet. Later bypassed by a new bridge for the A941/A95 system. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.
