Fettercairn Distillery jkl7931jhp Fettercairn Mearns Aberdeenshire Scottish Distillery whisky winter white unicorn motif village situated on the flat rolling fertile farmlands of the Mearns and passed through most often by travellers leaving the main north trunk road to Aberdeen and cutting northwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Deeside. A barony from 1604 and busy market village although the Mercat Cross partly dating from 1670 and currently standing in the village square is probably a relic of past times from the nearby county town of Kincardine. A popular hotel the Ramsay Arms and a working Distillery with a visitor’s centre offer attractions to visitor and I personally remember photographing a Queen Victoria and Prince Albert lookalike starting the Victorian Trail promotion for the then Kincardine and Deeside District Council. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation. This view is from the layby above Cockbridge before the start of the main climb over the Lecht. The summit of Lochnagar is just visible through the cleft in the hills directly above the Castle. As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself.
