Fort George Ardersier Highland military mortar gun canon Scotland fortress seacoast is located near Ardersier and the public access is organised by Historic Scotland although it is an active military base and this mortar gun is located between the two main bastions above the entrance. A very large complex of moats, bastions and buildings with spectacular outlooks to the surrounding sea and countryside it is well preserved historical site and fine example of military construction and it should be as probably the most expensive military fortification built in the Britain. Completed in 1796 and in the context of Scottish history, it appears more a statement of political empowerment to thwart any ambitions of the Highlanders towards future sedition rather than dealing with any likely military threat.
