This gallery contains pictures of the two main sites usually visited together on a day trip south of Cairo - Saqqara with the famous Step Pyramid, a huge necropolis with many tombs and other pyramids and Memphis, the ancient capital of Egypt now will an open air museum with the alabaster sphinx and the huge partial statue of Ramasses 11.

Saqqarah roadside Egyptian farming dates palms trees green crops plantation gives a very good idea of the reason for the location of this huge sprawling necropolis built along the desert escarpment well above the inundation zone of the River Nile. The fertile land supported the communities that built and later serviced these cult areas where the Valley Temple for instance would be the receiving place for offerings in memory of a particular Pharaoh after he became a God. The modern world needs food and these fertile areas still border the road from Cairo to Saqqara offering Egypt a substantial export business from dates to potatoes.
