Maiden Stone Cross-slab Bennachie summit spring Pictish Christian carved ancient Scottish relic stands by the roadside near Pitcaple and is easily accessible for the causal visit from a small lay-by carpark. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on pink granite stone and is probably one of the last carved in Grampian. It is so-called after the daughter of a local landowner who died during her elopement. During the winter and spring with the trees bare of foliage it is possible to see the summit of Bennachie.
