The tops of the columns have Hathor faces vandalised in antiquity, probably when it was filled with sand and seen as pagan for the earlier Christians who often used these temples as churches and were thus easily able to obliterate the faces. What is very wonderful even today is the elaborate nature of the decorations not only on the ceilings but also covering in exquisite details all the sides of the columns and the surrounding walls.
