Forest of Birse bnm7762jhp Forest Birse Finzean Feughside Feugh silver birches trees hill summer cloudy Deeside Scotland is a popular drive and picnic area to the westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. At the western end of the public road is a small church where the road then enters a shooting estate but has a public track to The Fungle, eventually Birsemore and Aboyne or heading westwards to pick up the Firmounth heading either for Mount Keen or Tarfside or swinging north for Glen Tanar.. Not long after leaving the public road heading for the Fungle it is possible to see Birse Castle on your right. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. Next to the Spital is a small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s. H Tree Finzean bnm4263jhp H Tree branch Finzean road Feughside interesting Deeside pine tree natural on the Finzean to Forest Birse road with its wide coverage of silver birch trees a popular drive and picnic area to the westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. Bearing right from Finzean this road crosses to Aboyne and Deeside via Ballogie. This tree I remember as a child over 50 years ago as being a Henderson my father showed it to the family on our car trips to picnics in the Forest of Birse and of course explained it was nature recognising our surname. Not sure if it was a deliberate act or just natural piece of luck and it is shame to see the right hand tree trunk appears to be dying. H Tree Finzean bnm4262jhp H Tree branch Finzean roadside Feughside unusual Deeside pine tree nature on the Finzean to Forest Birse road with its wide coverage of silver birch trees a popular drive and picnic area to the westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. Bearing right from Finzean this road crosses to Aboyne and Deeside via Ballogie. This tree I remember as a child over 50 years ago as being a Henderson my father showed it to the family on our car trips to picnics in the Forest of Birse and of course explained it was nature recognising our surname. Not sure if it was a deliberate act or just natural piece of luck and it is shame to see the right hand tree trunk appears to be dying. Deeside fm Learney bnm3083jhp Yellow gorse farm gate Learney hill Deeside Lochnagar Torphins Aberdeenshire Scotland viewed on a dramatic light day with strong clouds offering strong bursts of sunlight lighting up patches of the landscape like a roving searchlight. Here looking westwards from the Learney road which climbs up northwards from Torphins to the crossroads and a main rural route to Alford and Inverurie via Millbank. Lochnagar is the distant very distinct outline of Britain’s fourth highest mountain overlooking Royal Deeside here viewed over spring gorse blossom taken in the late afternoon just above the point as it drops down from Ord Caber past the turning to Learney House. Glen Dye bnm2710jhp Glen Dye Charr water hills moors Scotland Aberdeenshire Spring April snow taken just above the Spital Bridge looking westwards along part of this typical moorland and forestry estate located between Banchory on Royal Deeside and Fettercairn in Mearns crossed over the highland peaking at the Cairn O’Mount with viewpoint for views southwards to the coast near Montrose and the whole of the flat fertile plain south as far as Dundee. Looking over the old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. Next to the Spital is a small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.
