Looking over the old ruin by the Spital Burn which once was a ‘Spital’ or Hospital, a hostel for weary travellers either crossing the Cairn drove road or herdsmen moving cattle south to the Lowland Markets. The area had a reputation for robbers or highway men but after the railways took the main livestock to markets droving died out as did horse travelling and the roadside inn fell into ruin. Next to the Spital is a small single lane single arch bridge which has never been widened so is not liked by log lorries or coaches. There is a ruin on the other side of the Cairn O’Mount just above the Clatterin Brig which served a similar purpose and my Grandmother told me she had stayed in that hostelry when she and her new husband travelled on horse and trap from Montrose to Banchory in the late 1800’s.

Burn Vat Dinnet Loch Kinord viewpoint autumn water islands bare trees Royal Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland is reached after Loch Kinord on the North Deeside Road from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar after the town of Aboyne and before reaching Ballater at the right hand turner off marked Huntly and is part of this SSSI area with a visitor centre, carpark and public toilets and signed walks including this viewpoint with views eastwards over the Loch. The large island in the foreground is Castle Island on which was once a keep and to the right a small island which is called Crannog and was an ancient man made refuge.

Royal Deeside River Dee autumn colours silver birches Balmoral estate between Balmoral and Braemar after the long Inver straight past the Hotel, on the North Deeside Road west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland, going towards Invercauld and Braemar. A small pull off mainly for the fishermen but gives this usually scenic view of the River at most times of the year and so far not impacted by much severe clear felling that has been depleting Upper Deeside of some of its loveliest scenery, a periodic downside of commercial forestry operations.

There is a complete and relatively easy walk round the loch and passing the Royal Lodge of Glas-alt-shiel on the western shore surrounded by a small forest with the highest peak of the Broad Cairn reached by walking up to and past the huge cliff face of the Dubh Loch. Passing behind the Lodge you join the path up to the waterfall and which is another route to reach the plateau surrounding Lochnagar. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn. The Spital is also the starting off point for the walk to Lochnagar Mountain via the Gelder and Saddle.

The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from the northern river bank looking to the White Mounth. Located between the estates of Balmoral, south of the river and Invercauld to its north, this view is taken from the side of the North Deeside Road just beyond Invercauld House on the road to Braemar.

Morven summer Groddie ruined cottage cement art pillars Logie Coldstone Deeside Scotland farmland rural taken from a single track road leaving the Tarland to A97 Logie Coldstone road signed to Groddie just after the Raebush turning before entering Logie Coldstone. This ruined cottage on the Dinnet estate is what little is left of a South Milton Cottage which was uniquely adorned with arty cement Grecian pillars with spiralling vine and leaves the workmanship of a previous eccentric tenant Sandy Robb and which I featured in my book Grampian published by Alan Sutton Publishing in their series Photographer's Britain in 1993.
