River Deveron view valley fields summer trees Aberdeenshire Scotland Strathbogie is one of Aberdeenshire’s famous salmon fishing rivers, rising on the slopes of The Buck in the Cabrach and flowing into the Moray Firth at Banff. Here it is photographed on a small back road from Marnoch Bridge to the Milltown of Rothiemay which winds its way high above the river overlooking the Mains of Mayen before it drops to river level at Rothiemay. This was the first year I committed myself to digital photography using a Fuji S2Pro.

Aboyne Loch June path sunlight dappled peaceful blossom Deeside Aberdeenshire Scottish trees at the eastern approach is this very recognisable feature on arriving at this town mid way up the River Dee valley between Aberdeen and Braemar in the west. Following part of the old Deeside Railway, now Deeside Way, is this path alongside the Loch on a June sunny day. Aboyne is a popular tourist stopover with shops, restaurants, hotels and two golf courses is busy throughout the summer months with long established Highland Games and a recent and very successful Arts Festival based around a thriving Community Centre and Theatre. Crossing the River takes you onto the South Deeside Road, either east to Potarch turn or on through Ballogie, over Corsedardar to Finzean and Feughside. Westwards takes you via the Bridge of Ess and passed the Glen Tanar entrance to Dinnet and onto Ballater.

Old Brig O’Dee stone bridge heather river Dee Invercauld Scottish summer dramatic light and is one of the many military bridges built after the Forty Five Rebellion and that carried troops across the Highlands. This was built by Major Caulfield 1752 although often called a General Wade bridge, the person who started the process many years earlier. The bridge is located just east of Braemar and this view is from eastern side of the bridge, looking upstream with the golden colours of autumn larch and silver birch.

The village has historical connections with a cairn to the death of Macbeth in the woods nearby in 1057 as well as a 12th Century Peel signifying its strategic importance associated with ancient drove roads and various passes from the flat lands of Deeside northwards into Strathdon and the lands of Northern Aberdeenshire.

Tullich junction harvest Monaltrie autumn Ballater Lochnagar Deeside Scottish Aberdeenshire some 40 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland taken at the junction of the Pass of Ballater shortcut to continue on the main Braemar road bypassing Ballater itself.. Lying to the north of the River Dee it is a popular tourist centre for visitors travelling the length of this beautiful valley going southwards to Perth, visiting Balmoral Castle or Crathie Kirk or as a stopover before venturing northwards over the Lecht to Inverness. This was taken at ISO 1250 as against my usual 200 so assume I had mistakenly left this from a previous evening’s photography where I needed the higher sensitivity.

The road from Whitehouse crosses the River Don near keig at the junction for the Auchleven to Insch Road. Nearby is a righthand turn which follows the River Don passing the Cothiemuir Natural Burial Cemetery by way of the Lord's Throat and Paradise Woods to the Kemnay Monymusk road.
