Nearby is Esslie the Greater a few fields away lower down while to the east are the Nine Staines in the Garrol Wood. Taken using a Bronica ETRSi on 3rd October 1987.

Corsedardar Finzean 198331jhp
Feughside Corsedardar hill Aberdeernshire Dardanus Scots King broken marker burial is on a popular drive between Finzean and Aboyne following the B976 westwards into Aberdeenshire. It follows the course of the River Feugh which flows into the River Dee at Banchory but the upper end starting at Finzean is famous for its connection to the snow and sheep painter Joseph Farquharson whose estate and home was located there. The broken stone partly repaired with iron bands and cement after workmen broke it is supposed to stand in its original position and across from the modern War Memorial; nearby is a Millennium standing stone. The broken stone is claimed to have marked the place nearby where an early Scottish Pictish King Dardanus was killed circa AD75, according to Hector Boece’s History of the Scots 1527, because of his cruelty and universal dislike. This whole legend is beyond determining as fact. Slightly south west downhill of this and in the forest is a Long Cairn possibly dating to c.4000BC. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.

Kinord Excavation bnm5680jhp
Old Kinord prehistoric hut circles excavation telescopic pole camera archaeologists Grampian Scotland an excavation with a renewed investigation and assessment of previous excavations undertaken at this area around the shores of Loch Kinord and Davan by Aberdeenshire Council, Edinburgh and Reading Universities in the October of 2016. A prehistoric site of round houses or hut circles and souterrains [earth houses], buried stone lined chambers used for food storage and associated with settled occupation around an adjacent field system with additional food sourced from the lochs. There is a crannog in Loch Kinord. Generally dating from 2nd century BC through to 3rd Century AD little in the way of artefacts has ever been found. However these are substantial structures and a new one was identified in addition to those originally identified and modern techniques such as drone have allowed a more accurate overview of the area to be made and further modern soil and plant life analysis has added to the overall knowledge of the site and this period of man’s early Deeside history. Nearby is of course the very spectacular Bronze Age hilltop Recumbent Stone Circle at Tomnaverie excavated and partially restored by Reading University over two seasons in 1999 and 2000.

Well signed from the road via the village, with a Historic Scotland carpark and easy access. One of the largest sites in the North East with evidence suggesting early use over a few centuries but possibly stopped around the Beaker period c 2000BC. There is evidence, along with much bone and skull fragments, of extensive cremation use and a possible wooden mortuary structure from the finds of postholes in the middle of the central area. One of the monoliths has five cup-marks in a line on its inner face.

Kirkton of Bourtie RSC jkl7756jhp
Bronze Age Recumbent Stone Circle Kirkton Bourtie Scottish ruins low horizon field north of Inverurie off the Oldmeldrum road and easily accessed from the road in a field. Obviously avoid damaging crops although access should be left. Wonderful panoramic views over Aberdeenshire and Donside to the south and west with the hill of Bennachie in centre distance. The general view now to Bennachie has been ruined by an inappropriately situated huge metal barn and a good illustration at the thoughtless planning permission rules operated in Aberdeenshire.

Migvie Cross Slab jkl9308jhp
Migvie Stone Cross-slab Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands in the kirkyard of Migvie Church and is easily accessible for the casual visitor. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on gneiss stone, 2 metres high, similar to that at Kinord but held to be of inferior quality. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. South Leylodge Recumbent Flankers Stone Circle Kintore Aberdeenshire bronze Age historic ruined monument in a field [NJ766132] to the North of the dead end slip road signed Lauchintilly off the B977 Dunecht to Kintore Road. Only the flankers and recumbent appear to be left although there are several single standing stones in nearby fields, possibly monoliths from the original RSC but now useful scratching posts for cattle. Also called the South Ley Lodge RSC per Aubrey Burl’s book ref No: 98 P353 for his details regarding the site. Ian Shepherd in Exploring Scotland’s Heritage: Grampian suggests on page 145 that it might be an example of a RSC that was only that-the flankers and the recumbent and the rest of the circle was never completed. The point was also made that these stones were the first built as the largest and most important although this idea is somewhat contradicted in later studies made at Tomnaverie where these stones are thought to have been added as the final stage of closing out the monument. Cullerlie Stone Circle Stones Monoliths Garlogie Aberdeenshire Spring Scotland lies west of Aberdeen near Garlogie off the Aberdeen Tarland Road and is Historic Scotland signposted. It is situated on the edge of Leuchar Moss. Excavated in 1934, evidence was found of cremation in a series of kerb cairns and from wood charcoal analysis it is suggested this occurred at different times in history. Dated from 2nd Millennium BC, it is argued it was a later development of the more common Recumbent Stone Circles.
