Coull Slack Fork 1916311jhp Tillylodge Slack Coull fork junction panorama Lochnagar mountain Deeside Scotland Aberdeenshire just above the viewpoint at the Deeside Field Club marker pointing out the alignment of all the hills visible from the viewpoint is on the road out of Tarland heading north and ultimately takes you east to Aberdeen in North east Scotland. The central outline is of the mountain called Lochnagar, fourth highest in Britain and the distinct hill on the right is that of Morven. Claimed as a favourite viewpoint of Royal Deeside for Queen Victoria and hence it being called the Queens View. In the centre of this photograph is the hill with the Bronze Age Tomnaverie Recumbent Stone Circle built on it. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day. A few ruined crofts or farms can be seen in this stretch of road after Lumsden passing the charming ruin of Auchindoir Church and before joining the main Dufftown road at the boundary between Aberdeenshire and Moray. Driving through this countryside is evidence of past Highland clearances as well as illustrating the hard life of farming in this unfertile moorland where in today’s harsh economic climate even sheep farming is a struggle. There is a distant view eastwards of the distinct summit of the Tap O'Noth hill near Rhynie on which remains the vitrified fortifications from a Pictish hilltop fort and from which can be seen a similar relic from the past on Bennachie near Inverurie. Opposite the restaurant is the road to Auchenblae passing St Palladius Church and Drumtochty Castle in Glen Drumtochty which has interesting Forest Enterprise walks through mixed mature woodland and after leaving the forest the road enters Strath Finella passing a delightful small loch near Glensaugh, used for fishing and often visited by ducks and swans. Strathfinella Hills are at the foothill of the Grampians overlooking the wide flat fertile plain of The Mearns and this roadside view across to Hill Wood and over the site of Green Castle, the guardian of the entrance to the Cairn O’Mount which was later replaced by Kincardine Castle located further down on the Mearns.
