It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy all day and as in this photo during the cool of the evening and it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Nubian Couple EG051531JHP Egypt Aswan Nubian Village Woman Man Street Couple Lifestyle Ethnic in a Nubian House often visited on trips in feluccas on the River Nile to the Cataracts and the western bank with Aga Khan Mausoleum or camel rides into the desert to visit St Simeon monastery. This village on the West Bank is more of a tourist site as against a much more genuine village on Seheil Island which is only visited usually to see the Rock Carvings. These photos were taken with a compact camera to be less intrusive and I was advised by the tour guide not to use my professional gear. No model release form was obtained or needed for using this photo taken in a public place. Aswan Nubian Museum Oil Lamp EG052972JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum bronze oil lamp in man's face design with silver and garnet eyes one of mnay fascinating exhibits in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Karanis Roman Bath 6483EG07JHP Karanis City Kom Aushim Roman Bath House Decoration Sand Desert was a city on the north eastern edge of the area known as Fayoum and dates from Ptolemaic times through to 500AD. Two Roman dated temples survive in reasonable state and the southern one is dedicated to the crocodile Gods of Pnepheros and Petesuchos. Many finds have been made especially of life in a residential area with houses scattered throughout the site and there is also a fine Roman bath house as in this photo. A small museum now closed has ben replaced with an open air area with a selection of artefacts adjacent to the main walk to the temples. Standing 137m high, was 140m originally, was 230m on each size and probably was built using over 2 million blocks of stone averaging 2.5 tons although today it looks smaller than nearby Khafre Pyramid which higher on the Giza plateau. Photos is taken near the Funerary Temple of Khafre on the southern face of the Great Pyramid, a small figure walks just under the Solar barque or Boat Museum building on the left - the figure if transported to the top of the pyramid would probably not be visible. These photographs are a mixture of natural light time-exposures and some using the rare opportunity to light with flash, given the go-ahead by the custodian. They were taken in JPEG’s whereas today I would always use RAW files and having the advantage of a tripod I would always use natural or even mixed light where possible thus avoiding flash hot spots; flash incidentally does not cause damage to the paintings despite many such claims and restrictions. Egyptian Giza InfR EG020825jhp Giza Egyptian Sphinx enclosure man scale figure Pyramid infra red causeway view of this giant carved limestone lion statue with human head is somewhat of an enigma, but most likely carved out of an outcrop as an inspirational homage to the Pharaoh Khafre some 2500BC whose pyramid is directly behind it, although some attribute it to the previous Khufu who built the first and Greatest Pyramid. This huge prone lion figure with a human face faces the east to the rising sun and the modern day Cairo and is a very popular destination for the thousands that visit the Giza plateau and here viewed from the most accessible point on causeway from Khafre Pyramid to his Valley Temple. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor or Tokina SD 28-70mm f3.5lens with a Red filter, rated at 200ASA and processed in Aculux for 14 mins. Luxor Gold of Honour Bearer EG962097JHP Museum Luxor Exhibit Photograph Honor Carving Egyptian Man Statue Beads was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit dates from around 1400 BC recording the yellow beaded necklace symbolising a recognition of valor by a courtier or soldier and is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Friendly Egyptian Minya EG076030jhp River Nile Minya Egyptian man friendly student evening promenade view taken from the promenade overlooking the River Nile where I was staying for two nights as the base for visiting the sites of Bani Hasan and Amarna. There was a pleasant walk along the promenadewhere i met several students from the nearby University and chatted about soccer football and respective countries and it was also fascinating for the huge flocks of small birds that flew in to their roosting trees as evening closed in. We stayed in the Mercure Hotel Nefertiti, an aging hotel which had seen better days and it overlooked the newer chalet type complex called Hotel Aten. The site is centred on a Temple of Thoth, badly ruined, dating from Ramesside through to Roman times and was a place of pilgrimage so there are buildings for accommodation as well and remains of a Roman water wheelhouse as illustrated in this photo obtaining its water from a deep well. Near to the cemetery is the northern boundary stela of Akhenaten which can be visited after a short low grade climb up steps where it is protected from the elements behind a Perspex screen. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. The garden area of this site has many exhibits including sarcophagi, carved capitals as well as a reconstructed Tombs, this one is known as Tigrane [Tigran] rescued from construction work in Tigrane Pasha Street in 1952. The style of decoration in this tomb is particularly important as it shows the blending of the major influences in the City’s history-Egyptian, Greek and Roman. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Heliopolis German Description EG077073JHP Heliopolis Ancient Egyptian German Plaque Obelisk Pharaoh Senwosret north of Cairo is the oldest standing obelisk in Egypt at the site of the temple of Re-Atum although little is left of this once important sun cult centre and dating from around 1970BC at the beginning of the 12th Dynasty. Not visited usually as part of most tour packages it is an interesting visit enroute for other interesting Delta sites such as Tel Basta and Tanis. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
Esna Nile Romance EG02519jhp Egypt River Nile cruiseboat Romance Esna berthed livery design cruise modern photograph the journey from Luxor to Aswan by cruiseboat offers a peaceful way to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. During 2005 I experienced the busiest time on the Nile I had seen with convoys of cruiseboats and this photo is taken in 2002 above at Esna Lock where there was a delay for several hours waiting to make progress southwards and allowed for a rare visit to the delightful Ptolemaic-Roman Esna Temple. Probably in 2012 following the marked drop off in tourism following the Arab Spring and subsequent political problems scenes like this will not be happening. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. This roadsign to a farm of this name has been so famous that the council roadsign has disappeared on several occasions. Just to the west of this road is the impressive motte which can be seen from the road. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. Bennachie Hill to the west of Inverurie by the River Don is a distinctive landmark in central Aberdeenshire with its unusual peak man made with its partially vitrified Pictish fort remains and easily accessed from a visitors centre on the Chapel of Garioch road between Monymusk and Pitcaple. Crathes June Border to2040029jhp Crathes Castle Gardens June Border visitors viewing summer sunny Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland summer view of the relayed borders in 2004 and probably the best display of flowers I have seen in the June border over the years. The June Border is the summer jewel of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. At the bottom of the walled garden overlooking the path between the June Borders is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. The large island in the foreground is Castle Island on which was once a keep and to the right a small island which is called Crannog and was an ancient man made refuge.
