Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Gate eg962140jhp Dendara Temple entrance gate Domitian Trajan Pro-pylon Hathor Egypt top, located north of Luxor survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. The photo is of the main entrance North Propylon gate top section which is the main entrance into the modern site with a small shrine with beautifully carved floral Corinthian capitals not far away. Giza Khafre Pyramid EG024110jhp Khafre Pyramid Egyptian limestone blocks Tura casing top section cloud, the second largest of the Gizah site monuments and constructed between 2558-2532BC during the reign of the Pharaoh Khafre [Greek name Chephren], one of Khufu’s sons and is responsible during a reign of around 25 years for the magnificent Funerary complex which is held to include The Sphinx. Although his Mortuary Temple is almost nothing but a foundation, his Valley Temple is a fantastic example of the skills of the early Egyptian craftsman with huge accurately cut pillars of granite which was the house after his death for numerous statues including the famous diorite one now in the Cairo Museum. This view is of the western face showing the mainly uncovered structure although remains of the outer casing of Tura Limestone can still be seen near the top. Karnak InfR EG983735jhp Egypt Hatshepsut Thutmosis Granite Obelisks Karnak Temple infra red film is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view of Queen Hatshepsut's Obelisk, one of two remaining standing obelisks, is from between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. The southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake and this is what is shown in this photograph. The obelisks were of red Aswan granite and the standing one is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Both encased buy a room covering them in done by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower sections remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Luckily this has been largely untouched and most of the carvings including Queen Hatshepsut are pristine. Karnak Carved Wall EG075003jhp Hypostyle Hall Outer Wall Reliefs Karnak Temple Columns Roof carving a site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. The most famous and awesome part of The Great Temple of Amun is the hypostyle hall with it huge columns, the central ones reaching 23m high. Originally erected by Seti 1 and was completed by his son Ramses 11 and although today greatly lacking in perfection is still overwhelming in its scale. This photo is taken from the outside of the hall on the southern side of the Temple where most of the inscriptions are related to Ramses 11 and his various military campaigns in Syria, Palestine and Kadesh against the Hittites and the hall is just visible above the wall. This section is between the gate and the wall of the First Court behind the seventh Pylon. It appears that owing to lack of space his later Palestine campaign reports were over written the earlier Battle of Kadesh one although the themes of vanquished prisoners, Pharaoh smiting his enemies are the same. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. The figure in the foreground could also be Queen Hatshepsut as the cartouche above has ripple of water and bit of the feather that appear in her Named cartouche. She is presenting Goddess Maat to Amun [not in frame] led by the Goddess Mut below. Not a very expert interpretation so do not take as gospel. Apart from being in excellent condition generally, it offers much to see including some beautiful and detailed reliefs, the best coloured are in the second court and especially its scale. Not usually included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. This was taken in 1994 on my first trip to Egypt and was the view from a balloon flight over the West Bank. The burial chamber thought to have been robbed shortly after his death is under the ground water table and is inaccessible. The site dates back to the Middle Kingdom-Senusret’a reign was 1971-1926BC and he was the son of Amenemhet 1 building his pyramid near his fathers. Access to Senusret’s pyramid is through a local village and agricultural land at the edge of the desert escarpment as is common with most of the pyramid sites south of Giza. I remember passing a very well kept football pitch. A local custodian took me around and also allowed me to take flash photographs of some coloured reliefs on limestone blocks under a roofed area. Valley Kings EG0213071jhp Egypt Valley Kings Thutmosis Tomb KV43 Maya restoration hieratic text in the Valley of the Kings on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor which was robbed in antiquity and later restored by Horemheb through his official Maya; the section shown was the least effected by reflections on the perspex screen. In the Tomb-Chamber is a red granite sarcophagus with still very brilliant colourful decoration as illustrated in the photo of the Goddess Nephthys. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases. The Dess burn creates this delightful small waterfall known as the Sloc O'Dess best viewed from the roadside layby but ideal view at water level is inaccessible except to those willing to scramble up a steep rocky gorge side although a recent set of hand rails and some rough steps have made access to the lower viewpoint much easier. A constructed viewpoint on the eastern bank is reached by a long walk from the North Deeside Road. The falls are now near a recently constructed section of the Deeside Way, a walk and cycle track going from Aberdeen to Ballater, loosely following the old Deeside Railway line. Crathes Castle Gardens qax2454jhp Crathes Castle Rose Garden roses red white shrub topiary June Banchory Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland one of the centre pieces is the walled garden of this historic property with this larger section towards the eastern sloping side called The Rose Garden. The building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Any of my photographs are for scenic/tourist use only and cannot be used for product endorsement without the explicit permission of the NTS. Deeside Way Summer xvv1362jhp Potarch River Dee Aberdeenshire Scottish Deeside Way start carpark path looking westwards at the beginning of this section of the public footpath near the carpark at the Potarch Bridge at this well known crossing point over the river from the North Deeside Road between Banchory and Kincardine O’Neil for heading eastwards to Feughside up this Road via the Shooting Greens and past Slewdrum Community owned woodland or south to join the southern route from Aboyne to Finzean. In the summer the riverbank can be mobbed with picnickers and swimmers while it is also a popular salmon fishing stretch and the narrow turbulent water good for canoeing. This stretch of the Deeside Way has been recently completed and adds another piece to the public footpath network running from Aberdeen west along Deeside to Ballater.
