It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy all day and as in this photo during the cool of the evening and it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Giza Tomb Debhen EG024128jhp Giza Egypt Central Field ancient Debhen Tomb interior shaft tunnel in an area that lies roughly between the causeway of Menkaure and that of Khafre in which there are many old mastabas and rock cut tombs, some open to the public such as this one of Debhen and the most prominent of which is the Mastaba of Queen Khentkawes the last major Royal construction in the Giza complex. It is an area left to the individual to explore and has an eerie feel wandering amongst some grotesque eroded faces of limestone showing the natural damage that centuries of wind and blown sand can do to unprotected soft limestone. In this interior photograph because of the strong artificial light I changed the colour images to B&W as it shows up more clearly than the very orange colour cast digital images. It is thought at Maidum pyramid was the first smooth sided success evolving the Step Pyramid design from Saqqara. Now held to be started by Huni, last King of the 3rd Dynasty and completed by his son Sneferu so dating from around 2600BC. Latest theories suggest it collapsed possibly before it was completed evidenced by human remains found under the rubble. This view is looking up the causeway now covered in sand. You can also enter the interior of the pyramid down a long descending corridor of 57m into the natural rock under the pyramid where a short shaft allows access into the burial chamber with its impressive limestone lined corbelled roof. Near by is Mastaba No 17 into which you also access, torch advised, in which is a sarcophagus larger than the one in the King’s Chamber in the Great Pyramid at Giza. Luxor Tomb EG942813jhp Egypt Egyptian Luxor Tutankhamun Theban hill mountain Valley King Tomb entrance stairs looking into one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation and this one if the most famous. It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors. This was the only opportunity I had of using a tripod, special ticket available in 2001 and I had a roll of tungsten artificial light balanced slide film which allowed long exposures and a decent depth of field. The custodians could not have been more helpful and even cleared areas for me to photograph free of visitors but oh for my D700 DSLR. Although this is the summer of the long summer heat and sunshine the North East of Scotland was lucky to get some rain, unlike England, but the river is low and there are signs of river algae and the riverside reeds seem to have grown more.
