The Buchan province whose name means “land at the bend in the ocean” was underdeveloped but was developed as part of the enlightenment as landowners sought to improve their estates and the overall agriculture of the land. Nearby Cuminestown was one of the first founded in 1761 by Joseph Cumine and New Byth followed soon afterwards and later followed by other Central Buchan villages like Maud, Mintlaw and New Deer.
