Luxor Farmland EG051941jhp Egyptian Luxor Theban hills farming fields fertile flat land agriculture views taken on the taxi trip from Luxor City, crossing the River Nile by the new southern road bridge and then heading north and westwards towards the main ancient sites of the West Bank. The trip is also a reminder of the wealth that was the engine that created ancient Egypt because of the fertility bordering the River Nile caused by the annual inundations with the flood waters depositing fertile mud giving abundant food sufficient to feed the large transient labour force required to build these huge monuments from Giza, Memphis, Thebes and southwards to Abu Simbel. Bellabeg Lost wyy6103jhp Bellabeg motte Lost roadsign famous stolen Strathdon Scotland summer farm querky scene just to the west of Bellabeg village crossing the Nochty road bridge by the Spar Grocery store from the main Strathdon road. This roadsign to a farm of this name has been so famous that the council roadsign has disappeared on several occasions. Just to the west of this road is the impressive motte which can be seen from the road. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.The Doune of Invernochty is one of the largest such Norman castle motte’s in Scotland and although making use of an existing glacial deposit the mound was shaped to large proportions and is thought to have included a high status chapel as well as the fortified structure. The surrounding ditch could have been flooded as remains of a man made lake whose eastern retaining bank can still be seen. Clouds near Montgarrie asd6992jhp Storm Cloud cumulonimbus dramatic shape white blue sky Aberdeenshire Scottish spring weather and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. Their shapes, size and often awesome sense of power make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. This formation is taken over Aberdeenshire near Montgarrie just north of Alford. The road in the foreground runs northwards from Montgarrie to Whitehaugh Forest and this photo was taken near the entrance to Whiteside Farm and Black Bridge. Peel of Lumphanan fgh2451jhp Lumphanan Peel motte mound moat ditch summer Scottish history Aberdeenshire located to the west of the village of Lumphanan. The village has historical connections with a cairn to the death of Macbeth in the woods nearby in 1057 as well as this 12th Century Peel signifying its strategic importance associated with ancient drove roads and various passes from the flat lands of Deeside northwards into Strathdon and the lands of Northern Aberdeenshire. The original defences are now held to be turf ramparts rather than a palisade and the large outer wall was found to be 18th century agricultural work rather than original barricades creating a moat. On the top of the large flat area is the foundation outline of a rectangular Halton House dating to the 15th century. A small car parking area is available for the visitor and there is a very informative information board provided by Historic Scotland. Bellabeg Motte wyy6109jhp Bellabeg motte fort Doune Invernochty fortress Glenbuchat road Scottish summer scene viewed from the main Strathdon road. The motte can be seen from the road after crossing the Water of Nochty Bridge and after the right hand turn to Lost with its famous sign. A public carpark is opposite the motte, an ancient Pictish fort site in origin, later reinforced for the Earldom of Mar in the 1100,s but later redundant with the construction of Glenbuchat Castle further to the east and strategically placed above the other entrance to the Glen.
