Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora Crathes Castle au83636jhp
British spring Aurora Corona Crathes Castle zenith crown overhead shape pastel colours turrets located at this National Trust for Scotland property near Banchory, west of Aberdeen. Taken on the 25th March 1991 at 00.10hrs UT is one of the many displays in early 1990, a decade which proved to be an extremely productive one for Aurora displays and photography. I have already added other photos taken using Fuji RSP11 35mm slide film rated at 1600asa and developed in this case at my local Lab in Aberdeen for 1600asa-pushed 2 stops however this particular film was Fuji P1600 which for a short time was their fastest slide film. They were exposed around 20secs which from experience I had settled on as about the best combination of film, exposure time and with a 28mm or 24mm f2.8 wide angle lens so these are much brighter and more colour saturated although slightly more visual than would be seen with the human eye. The photos taken in this March sequence shows the huge scale of a Corona zenith completely overhead with a pastel mix of green and red rays from high level oxygen falling from directly overhead and dropping to the apparent ground level set against the useful scale of the castle.

Egypt Ancient Egyptian Lake Nasser al-Sabu Statue Fallen Ramses Crown is located on the shores of Lake Nasser after relocation from its previous location 2km away to avoid flooding after the creation of the High Dam in Aswan. The temple was built by Ramesses 11 of which much evidence stands as statues, sphinxes and engaged Osiride Statues in the inner courtyards. The temple was later used for Christian worship and has the curious site of Ramesses adoring St Peter in the sanctuary. This site is usually a part of a Lake Nasser cruise and begins a part of the cruise which is completed with a longish hot desert walk past this fallen statue and double crown of Ramesses to the nearby sites of Dakka and Maharraka before returning to the cruiseboat.

Egypt Alexandria Nile ancient Nilometer door well archaeology silted dry Rhakote hill modern Mediterranean coastal city no longer reminiscent of tae ancient city from Pharaohic times and little of that ancient time remains. A few isolated sites can be visited and this is one is located on Rhakote Hill one of the earliest sites in the City with some Roman ruins and archaeology. On the hill is the dominant granite column called Pompey’s Pillar dating back to the reign of Emperor Diocletian around 297BC but associated with the later rival of Caesar when it was held, mistakenly, his head was placed on top of the column. Also of interest are some granite Sphinxes and underground burial vaults. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours.

Egypt Alexandria Serapeum Roman ruins bath excavation sphinxes rocky hill modern Mediterranean coastal city no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaohic times and little of that ancient time remains.

Cloud anvil Scotland Deeside September evening Jim Henderson Photo stone and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. The shapes, size and often awesome sense of power of clouds and often couple with rain storms and rainbows make them a subject I enjoy photographing and are a truer reflection perhaps of the great mix of weather and light we have in the North East of Scotland. One big headache is the rain that creates them so lenses have to be kept dry or covered as much as possible and it also appears in the images are short lines as it falls catching the sunlight although in these photos not a problem.

Any of my photographs are for scenic/tourist use only and cannot be used for product endorsement without the explicit permission of the NTS. Please contact their Edinburgh Head Office at Wemyss House, 28 Charlotte Square, Edinburgh, EH2 4ET. This is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 15 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. This building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant.
The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive.

Falls Feugh Autumn SO20036jhp
Scotland Autumn Falls River Feugh Banchory colours beech golden waterfall water rocks at famous Royal Deeside falls taken from footbridge near Banchory. This photo was taken in 2003 and was one of my early digital photographs using the Fuji S2Pro, a camera I had tested and decided to switch to fulltime giving up slide film. A recent upgrade of the public viewing footbridge by the old road bridge has had additional interest by the creation of a wooden sculpture created for the ‘selfies’ as an alternative to allowing padlocks to be attached to the wire screens which was becoming a safety hazard given the accumulated weight. The viewing area is very popular for watching the salmon leaping up the falls on their annual migration to the spawning beds in the burns that feed the Water of Feugh especially in the Forest of Birse.

Crathes Rainbow bnm6581jhp
Double rainbow colourful Deeside spring Scottish River Dee Crathes bridge weather evening sunlight and although not perhaps calendar material are none the less great photography subjects. Captured by accident returning from dropping friends off at Aberdeen Train Station and spotted the bright sunshine and showers, always a goof oemn for rainbows.
