There are many important elements to this temple and include an extensive King’s List and the spectacular remains of the Cenotaph to Sety 1, the Osireion.
This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins.

Visits to Abydos are not usually included in standard Nile cruise packages and are usually arranged a private excursions from Luxor usually by road. In addition the trip can be extended to visit the Ptolemaic Dendera Temple near Qena although this temple is often organised as a separate excursion as par of a day Nile cruise from Luxor. If visiting Abydos make extra time for a visit by foot to the nearby small temple of Ramasses 11 which has some of the most wonderfully colourful wall paintings open to daylight so easily photographed.

The photograph illustrates the Osireion, a cenotaph to Sety, completed by Merenptah but also a symbolic tomb for the God Osiris. This is now open to the air and is partly submerged but still its awesome size can still be appreciated with its megalithic granite blocks similar in appearance to the Valley Temple at Giza.

Corse Castle Scotland asd5303jhp
Corse O'Neil Scottish Castle imposing height exterior tower spring sunny sky ruin slope is located off B9119 Tarland road-take O’Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photograph shows exterior from the southern approach aside the adjacent pond and steep bank giving an increased sense of height and making it seem very imposing. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored.
This particular image shows exaggerated converging verticals because of the closeness of the lens and despite it being an ultra wide focal length for given the situation of the castle to steep slopes it is not possible to get far enough away. The effect although not accurate or truth does increase the sense of height and scale.

Raemoir Monument xcv9843jhp
Scotland battle memorial Corrichie Aberdeenshire roadside granite forest clear felled heather situated by the B9125 Garlogie to Torphins road running along the left of this photo is to the north of the road at the base of the Mither Tap/Hill of Fare. Now more prominent than usual as the area around this imposing granite monolith has been clear felled. There is a slight rough layby by the roadside allowing access up a grassy path amongst broom and heather.
The monument was erected in 1951 by the Deeside Field Club to commemorate the Battle of Corrichie
of 1562 between the forces of Mary Queen of Scots lead by the Earl of Moray who beat those led by the Gordon’s of Huntly, in several battles between the Reformation and a possible Catholic resurgence.
Inscribed on the stone in Gaelic are “Cuimhnichibh La Coire Fraoichidh” translated as Remember the Day of Corrichie. Although Queen Mary is claimed to have sat and watched the battle she was in fact in Aberdeen and both the ‘Queens Chair’, a granite outcrop on Berry Hill and Queen Mary’s well are probably fictional creations.

Inchdrewer Castle vbn0487jhp
Inchdrewer Castle imposing fortress towers battlements tower house ruin Scotland Aberdeenshire built in the mid-1500’s around 1542 as a traditional L-shaped tower house was destroyed by fire in 1713 on the death of George Ogilvy 3rd Lord of Banff, but rebuilt and a new round tower was added. Tenanted in the early 19th Century but derelict from 1836 and although partially restored to make weather tight has not been occupied since. A Listed in 1972.

Ownership was initially by Currour’s, sold to Ogilvies of Dunlugas in 1557, later in 1803 Abercromby of Birkenbog inherited it, later sold to Count Mirrees and on his death sold to Olga Roh in 2013, former Russian model who has plans to renovate it as family home. Corgarff Castle Imposing VS2683JHP
Corgarff Castle Strathdon Lecht Aberdeenshire Historic Scottish fortified fort just off the A939 Ballater/Tomintoul road with a commanding position over this strategically important route to the north. The core tower was built in 1537 and the most striking star-shaped curtain wall dates from 1748 when occupied by the Hanoverian troops tracking down Jacobite rebels. Its final historical importance was during the anti-whisky smuggling duties around the late 1820. Now restored and with interesting exhibits from those last days of occupation.

As this is a Historic Scotland property the photograph should be used for editorial, scenic or tourist related use. The castle carpark is at the bottom of steepish hill with a walk of several hundred yards from the entrance and ticket office situated in the castle itself. It is open for most of the summer and requires an entrance fee to be paid.
