Dendara Osiris Chapel 5586EG07JHP Dendara Temple Osiris Chapel small roof ceiling opening interior photograph at this home of the Goddess Hathor, north of Luxor survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. The photo is of The Chapels of Osiris on the roof of the temple and in the western one it shows Osiris floating in the only source of light; a visit to the roof also gives wonderful views of the surrounding countryside. There is slight distortion of the nearest block because of the wide angle lens - the blocks are absolutely perpendicular. Aswan Museum Osiride Ramses EG052950JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Statue of Ramses 11 from Garf Hussein temple colonnade built in the 19th Dynasty by Setau Viceroy of Kush in sandstone. En Exhibit inside a modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Remains of the Tuthmosis 1 Osiride figures that would have faced into the Transverse Hall dominated now by the standing obelisk of red Aswan granite of Hatshepsut and which is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. in the background of this photo si the top of the remaining standing obelisk of Tuthmosis 1. Sebua Osiride Statues JHPEG051719 Egypt Temple Lake Nasser es-Sebua al-Sabu Statues Osiride Ramses Court is located on the shores of Lake Nasser after relocation from its previous location 2km away to avoid flooding after the creation of the High Dam in Aswan. The temple was built by Ramesses 11 of which much evidence stands as statues, sphinxes and engaged Osiride Statues in the inner courtyards. The temple was later used for Christian worship and has the curious site of Ramesses adoring St Peter in the sanctuary. This site is usually a part of a Lake Nasser cruise and begins a part of the cruise which is completed with a longish hot desert walk to the nearby sites of Dakka and Maharraka before returning to the cruiseboat. Tanis Osiris Relief 1332EG05jhp Tanis Ancient Egyptian Royal tomb Sheshonq Osiris rising rays reliefs located site to side of main and famous Royal Tomb of Psusennes which was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. Tanis was once held to be the capital created by Ramses, now thought to be in the Quantir area but it was the capital of the 24th Nome of Lower Egypt and important in the late Egyptian period. The site has a Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring. Abu Ghurab Sun Temple EG02AA41jhp Egyptian Abu Ghurab Temple Niuserre Solar Obelisk base eastern aspect isolated location south of Giza, about 25km from Cairo and situated on the desert escarpment after travelling through rural roads and walking in agricultural land and then the sand. Originally thought to be a pyramid, called Riga but now known to be the Sun-Temple of Nyusere c2453-2422 built on an east-west access and although a very elaborate miniature pyramid complex is now very ruined and is thought to be the only one of six standing that were built in the area. Large alabaster bowls of considerable beauty remain from the slaughterhouse where animals would have been sacrificed for the Heb Sed and in similar stone, a huge four-sided Hetep Altar stone remains intact in front of the base of where a large Solar Obelisk would have stood. 2km away is the site of Abusir whose remaining pyramids can be seen across the desert to the south. Unas to Abusir EG02AA71jhp Saqqara Unas Unis Wenis Pyramid Abusir pyramids desert ancient Egypt ruin on the southwest corner near the Step Pyramid and which was the smallest of the pyramids built belonged to Unas, the last King of the 5th Dynasty around 2345BC and is a considerable state of disrepair although some of the finer quality Tura limestone casing still remains. The inside is now not accessible but is one of the easiest to enter and entry by Gaston Maspero was financed by Thomas Cook & Co where a highly decorated burial chamber covered in Pyramid Texts was uncovered along with a huge basalt sarcophagus. This photo looks northwards past the Pyramid of Unas across the desert to the distant outlines of the three small pyramids at Abusir. Built in the style of his castle Roslyn, it was taken over by Ogilvie of Deskford during the reign of James 11 and its fortifications strengthened. Subsequently handed to Sir John Gordon but was abandoned in 1600 and fell in ruin by 1638 never to be repaired again. It is located on a steep buff below rugged and almost inaccessible cliffs just north west of Sandend near Portsoy on the northern coast of Aberdeenshire facing the Moray Firth. There was an original fortress on the site dating back to before 1246 when records indicate that it was to be fortified during the reign of King Alexander 111 to fend off attacks by the Vikings although it was subsequently captured by them. The Ogilvie’s had lost interest in Findlater Castle after they decided to build Cullen House a somewhat different elegant mansion close to Cullen. Once there was a wooden bridge giving access to the castle after a steep descent down the cliffs. Little now remains of the building and it is now in a dangerous state of repair and although accessible should be taken with great care. Remains of some walls which include two floors with vaulted rooms possibly the kitchen and a dungeon can be easily seen from the clifftop as in this photograph. There is a signed carpark as you leave Portsoy and pass Sandend. From the carpark at the rear of farm buildings you pass a doocot on the left but continue on straight down towards the cliffs along a grass cut path and you will see the castle below you where there are seats and an information board. The name it is suggested might derive from the Norse Fyn is white and leitr for cliff, giving Fynleitr or Fynletyr whereas another suggestion is from the Gaelic with fionn for white and leitir for cliff both relating to the nature of the cliffs around this area exhibiting high deposits of quartz. The bell dates from 1679 and came from Rotterdam. 17th century wall tablets in the church commemorate Sir George Ogilvy of Barras who was Governor of Dunnottar Castle during the siege and who organised the smuggling of the regalia out of the castle. On a personal note, I had the privilege of photographing a re-enactment of what is thought to be how it was done for the current coloured version of the Dunnottar Castle Guidebook.
