Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.

Underneath the temple are a series of passageways and crypts used for the storage of sacred objects and one opening into the vestibule of the Throne of Re is open to the public. Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut Miniature Coffins EG11730JHP Egyptian Museum Cairo Interior Exhibit Tutankhamun Burial four minature sarcophaguses for storage in the canopic jars and replicated the second sarcophagus of Tutaumkhamun in the burial chmaber. Now in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx

The in fill from many Atenist temples has been removed particularly from the inside of the ninth pylon and much of the area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. In the distance at the obelisks of Thutmose 1 and Queen or King Hatshepsut. This particular photograph was taken in 1998 as part of a Stars and Signs cruise and we were able to access the temple at sunrise before it opened to the main package tour traffic. This allowed photos to be taken in beautiful golden early morning light which was particularly useful in highlighting some of the rich wall reliefs. This view is of the Eighth Pylon with its southern face dominated by five colossal figures from Amenhotep 1, the most complete and Amenhotep 11 while the two either side of the doorway are of Tuthmosis 11 and all were later restored by Tuthmosis 111 although all are now in very poor condition. The pylon was originally raised by Hatshepsut but subsequently her identity was removed as was the name of Amun which offended the heretic Pharaoh Akhenaten but later restored by Seti 1. The area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. This storage shed, a mini museum with two standing statues is near the delightful small temple pf Ptah on the walk along the enclosure wall to Montu Temple. Avery seldom frequented area so always quiet although an extra ‘entry’ fee maybe required to keep the local custodians happy. Constructed by Thutmosis 111 during his reign 1500-1450BC it shows continuous repair and additions through until the Ptolemaic period while inside the small sanctuaries are broken granite states of Ptah and Sekhmet. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast which has happened to me twice now at this temple. Karnak Amenhotep 11 Temple EG075038jhp Karnak Temple Sed festival Amenhotep 11 columns fourth court pylons located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the ninth and tenth pylons on the east wall of the fourth court in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view is looking over the fourth court from the around the eighth to tenth pylons largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. The Jubilee Temple of Amenhotep possibly for the Sed festival has been recently excavated and partially restored and is thought to have been physically moved, stone by stone, from near the eighth pylon by Horemheb when the ninth pylon was added. Although the original temple is attributed to Amenhotep 11 it was later dammaged by the Atenists and then repaired by Sety 1. A prehistoric site of round houses or hut circles and souterrains [earth houses], buried stone lined chambers used for food storage and associated with settled occupation around an adjacent field system with additional food sourced from the lochs. There is a crannog in Loch Kinord. Generally dating from 2nd century BC through to 3rd Century AD little in the way of artefacts has ever been found. However these are substantial structures and a new one was identified in addition to those originally identified and modern techniques such as drone have allowed a more accurate overview of the area to be made and further modern soil and plant life analysis has added to the overall knowledge of the site and this period of man’s early Deeside history. Nearby is of course the very spectacular Bronze Age hilltop Recumbent Stone Circle at Tomnaverie excavated and partially restored by Reading University over two seasons in 1999 and 2000.
