Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Aurora The Neuk au71118ajhp Scottish Deeside Aurora Borealis active green many rays Cassiopeia winter February 1990 taken on the Harestone Road to the west of Banchory at a small inset into a field by The Neuk farm. I cleared it with the farmer that I could park there and it gave me a clear view to the Hill of Fare to the North of Banchory. Other photos were taken at a corner layby opposite the entrance to the Ley Farm which I tended to use more as it was more convenient and a tree at the entrance gave a very striking foreground. This photo taken on the 15th February around 23.02hrsUT is one from early 1990 displays which proved to be an extremely productive decade for Aurora displays and photography. I took this photo of the Aurora display using the Fuji RSP 11 35mm slide film rated by Fuji at 800asa and exposed around the 20 seconds I later settled on. These locations became my usual choices for most of the Aurora displays I photographed when living in Banchory throughout the early 90’s, as easily accessible from Banchory and with a clear light pollution free view to the North which meant that any clear night was spent watching the Northern skies for the tell-tale signs of a possible display, usually proceeded by an area of obvious brightness on the evening before the main display. It also gave easy access to Crathes Castle which featured a couple of times as different foreground to Aurora displays. Aurora Cairn O Mount au617118jhp Scottish Aurora Borealis display Boxing Day west rays Cairn O’Mount 1989 taken from just below the Cairn O’Mount on its North face and which looks northwards towards Deeside. This photo is from the fourth Aurora Display I photographed after my first one in September and the arc started to develop from 22.00 hrs UT onwards. I felt that the summit of the Cairn would be a good vantage point and offer uncluttered views northwards. It was a good light pollution free viewpoint but apart from an occasional passing car, headlights a headache during an exposure, I soon realised that it was along way to go and of course further south of and way from any displays. In some of the photos there are two small lights on the horizon which I reckoned were from a farm on the Hill of Fare several miles to the north. The single dark pole is a snow pole and on the side of the nearby hillside are snow fences. This display was a classic in terms of an Arc, waxing and waning until it reached a point of no return when single and then multiple burst upwards from the arc as well as moving quite rapidly from right to left; East to West. Generally the colour was a pale whitish/yellow colour with a hint of red in some of the rays. The project to photograph an Aurora came after a missed opportunity earlier in the year in March with what became known as the Big Aurora, a full Corona over Deeside. I had got the idea of trying to photograph a display following on from my success in 1986 of capturing Halley’s Comet thanks to the support of the Astronomy Ian Shepherd at the Edinburgh Observatory. I had heard about the Big Aurora but had missed the display buried away in my darkroom processing B&W photos for the local newspaper. Ian suggested I contact John MacNicol, President of the Aberdeen Astronomy Society and he eventually tipped me off about the first display I saw. Later tips helped until I started to park at a favourite viewpoint every clear night over the forthcoming years, the days before the Internet, and just watch the night sky. I took Fuji RHP 400asa and RSP 11, rated at 1600ASA, the fastest available at the time in 35mm slide film of which this photo is an example and I tried both as well as bracketing exposures around the 20 second mark based on my experiences with photographing the Comet and aware that exposures much longer than that incurred the affect of star trail so instead of sharp dots for stars they became lines. Instead of a telephoto lens as per the Comet, for Aurora I used my widest lens, a Nikkor 28mm with a f2.8 widest aperture. Push processing the slide film at the Fuji lab by two stops to the equivalent of 1600asa I found that an exposure around 20 second eventually gave the best results for best colour saturation and exposure and giving the maximum control of grain without it appearing washed out from underexposure. This basic arrangement eventually worked best when I moved to a DSLR Fuji S2 in 2003 with an ISO of 1600 giving comparable results to the ASA equivalent and the noise factor was akin to the grain of slide film. As I shot my general landscape work using Fuji I stayed with it for the Aurora although Kodak film was acceptable in quality and results. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. Hatshepsut Temple EG02118JHP Hatshepsut Temple limestone carved block painted reliefs Theban Hill cliffs dominating the Upper or central court was opened again in 2002 and makes the visit to this magificent temple almost complete except that entrance into the burial chmaber itself is restricted. This magnificent mortuary temple is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor at an area called Deir el-Bahri and built into the base of the cliffs of the Theban Hill behind which are branches of the Valley of the Kings. This is a collection of Infra Red Black & White film photographs taken of the main sites of mainly Ancient Egypt in the late 1990's and they give a very different feel to the sites with the particular ghostly effect of this specialised Kodak film. Sites covered include Abydos, Colossi of Memnon, Abydos temple, Osireion, Dendera Temple, Edfu Temple, Esna Temple, Esna Lock, Karnak Temple, Kom Ombo Temple, Luxor Temple, Philae Temple, Aswan Felucca; River Nile cruise, Pyramids of Giza and The Sphinx
Luxor Temple InfR EG981118jhp Luxor Temple Egypt pylon obelisk statues carvings infra red B&W ghostly in front of the main pylon greeting visitors to this Temple located on the east bank of the River Nile at Luxor, Egypt is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues. On the side of the huge black granite seats are carvings in excellent state of repair illustrating early the mythology of ancient Egypt, the Union of the Two Lands; Upper and Lower Egypt. Throughout this elegant structure, so much more understandable than the sprawling complex at Karnak, there are examples of the great skills of workmanship that give ancient Egyptian monuments their huge appeal and impact even in these modern days. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. Dendara InfR EG98118jhp Dendera temple Egypt mammisi birth house screen carving beautiful infra red film and considered some of the best and most delicate of workmanship of this period and here adorning the Roman mammisi of birth house attributed to Nectanebo 1. It shows the birth of the young God Harsomtus, child of Hathor and Horus of Edfu. This temple is also famous as having one of the only representations the famous Queen Cleopatra V11 with her son by Julius Caesar, Caesarion. The temple can be reached by road from Luxor and is also the destination for a popular day cruise on the River Nile from Luxor via Qena. This particular photograph was taken using Kodak Infra Red film which gives this classic ghostly affect. It was taken using a Nikon FM manual camera, 28mm Nikkor lens with a R72 filter and processed in ID11 for 11 mins. The workers are known for their work in the Valley tombs which they reached walking over the Theban plateau. Bani Hassan EG076118jhp Bani Hassan resthouse fields agriculture Egypt River Nile Minya crops green entrance to a site offering thirty nine tombs along the face of a bluff above the River Nile some 20km south of Minya make Bani Hasan a special visiting place for its decorations along the themes of wrestling, battle scenes and the collection of taxes by the nomarchs of the Oryx Nome give some beautiful tomb paintings to view - unfortunately photography inside the tombs was absolutely refused when I visited. It is fairly steep climb to the tombs but is on a properly constituted path with well spread out steps as some of the photographs show and offers some fantastic views of the River Nile bending its way through a rich green fertile area of fields and farming. Tell Basta Archaeology EG077118JHP Tell Basta Bastet temple archaeology carved block photo Butastis ancient Egyptian site Delta is a large complex near the town of Zigazig north of Cairo which has recently had a new visitors centre and museum built but remains a rather confusing collection of damaged material with the main temple of Bastet reflected in this photographs. Damaged by earthquakes some 2000 years ago as is seen in much of the structural damage today it is still fascinating with the excitement of finding beautiful carvings and examples of the craftsmanship of those ancient builders now hidden away amongst grass and a scatter field of damaged remnants from what was a huge cult site to the Cat Goddess Bastet visited by hundreds and thousands of pilgrims as recorded by Herodotus. Not usually part of normal Egyptian packages but can be visited privately and is part of an interesting day journey that should include Tanis as well. Hawara Pyramid eg013118jhp Hawara Fayyum Amenemhet pyramid mudbricks exposed ruined building wall necropolis, to the south of Cairo was the last pyramid built in the 12th Dynasty, Middle Kingdom, by the Pharaoh Amenemhet 111 of the later design using mudbrick core which still stands dominant and substantial but the limestone covering of Tura Limestone is now all missing. The entrance on the south side is visible but the high ground water table means it is flooded as are all the lower chamber areas. It is most famous for the references to the Labyrinth; a comparison of its mortuary and temple complex to that at Knossos by Herodotus although little now remains except for a large area of sandy mounds and hollows divided by a canal; new excavations are underway to determine what might still exist. This pyramid was built after the king’s first attempt at Dashur was abandoned owing to subsidence problems it appears unfinished at the time of his death c1797BC. Saqqara Step Pyramid EG051118jhp Ancient Egypt limestone bricks south west corner Step Pyramid Saqqara dating from around 2500BC to the south of Cairo is the earliest stone built monument in Egypt and probably in the world and near the ancient Egyptian capital of Memphis and was designed by Imhotep, one of the greatest minds in ancient Egypt and later deified as a God. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before. It also looks for a degree of visitor control for these days many more tourists enter this very small area coming in coach convoys from the Red Sea Resorts and not just the River Nile cruiseboats which used to be the major source of vistor numbers. This is one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt is this desolate desert valley beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation. It is possible to climb over the hills above the Valley, pass above the huge amphitheatre of Deir el-Bahri above Hatshepsut’s spectacular Mortuary Temple and come down into Deir el-Medina, the workers village using the same paths as they must have done over 3000 years ago. Crathes Castle Gardens fgh0118jhp Crathes Castle Deeside Camel garden Scottish summer panorama bird bath blue skies Aberdeenshire Scotland of which one of the centre pieces is the walled garden of this historic property with the Camel Garden offering a most pleasant view of the castle and on this July day blessed with bright sunshine and blue skies. The building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. This fortress occupies a site going back into Pictish or earlier times and has had an association with most aspects of Scottish history through its most turbulent times, most notable was the siege during Cromwell’s attempts to conquer Scotland and again in 1685 during the imprisonment of the Covenanters in the infamous Whigs Vault; viewed here at dawn from the cliffs during the week of the autumn equinox.
