One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon.

Looking up into the ceiling of the Hypostyle Hall, its lintels and the papyriform painted open bell shaped capitals still showing original colour.

Has Ramesside Temple of Amun with other temples from reigns of Osorkon, Sheshonq and Ptolemy but of special interest are the Royal Tombs where that of Psusennes in particular was intact and gave up one of the richest burial good collections, apart from Tutankhamun, with its famous silver coffin, now in the Cairo Museum. A visit to Tanis is usually by private means but can be incorporated with a day trip through the Delta visiting Heliopolis and Tell Basta but does involve considerable motoring.

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

It is possible to climb over the hills above the Valley, pass above the huge amphitheatre of Deir el-Bahri above Hatshepsut’s spectacular Mortuary Temple and come down into Deir el-Medina, the workers village using the same paths as they must have done over 3000 years ago.

Todhead headland cliffs sea waves crashing rocks southwards Scottish Mearns Aberdeenshire Scotland located south of Catterline is the former Todhead Lighthouse on the North east coast of Aberdeenshire south of Stonehaven standing pudding stone cliffs. The cliffs stick out on a small headland but with sheer drops into the North Sea but offering spectacular views of the sea pounding on the rocks below and views northwards along the coast from Braidon Bay and to the distant Forley Craig beyond Catterline, famous for its seafood restaurant. The lighthouse was built in 1897 by D.A. Stevenson and is still a stylish if sad reminder of the heyday of Victorian Maritime heritage. Its short ‘dumpy’ tower hides a shaft dug into the cliffs underneath which allowed the original clockwork mechanism to operate as described in Jane Geddes’s Deeside and Mearns Architectural Guide.

Luxor aircraft flying high Egypt Sahara clouds cumulus desert holiday flight after a Kuoni Egyptian package including Nile and Lake Nasser cruise returning to the UK in an Egyptair Airbus on the trip home from Luxor to Heathrow via Cairo. After crossing the Mediterranean the usual route was along the Adriatic Italian coast crossing the Dolomites and Alps, across France and into Heathrow. This is very similiar to the next photograph with similiar clouds formations taken a year later.

Royal Deeside Scottish summer sunset clouds orange hilline forest field Aberdeenshire Kincardine O’Neil is some 25 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. The most dramatic and vibrant period only lasts a few minutes so it is very much being in the right place at the best time but it helps having a forest or nice river scene on the doorstep but with a major mountain range to the west of Deeside, often the sun setting behind them or a large bank of rain cloud kills off the best of any last minute colour. The biggest problem with summer sunsets are they can take longer from the start of colourful clouds through to the more subtle final reds and in that time you are an open meal ticket for the notorious Scottish midges.

Craigievar Castle Daffodils spring Scottish Aberdeenshire Mar district National Trust for Scotland property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round.
Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.

Burn O’Vat gorge entrance path Dinnet trees water rocks Royal Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland is reached after Loch Kinord on the North Deeside Road from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar after the town of Aboyne and before reaching Ballater at the right hand turner off marked Huntly and is part of this SSSI area with a visitor centre, carpark and public toilets. Claims this was a hideout for outlaws, namely Patrick Gilroy Macgregor, an early relative of Rob Roy, who operated in the Deeside Area.

Inverurie River Don Spring Daffodils Coldwells Burnhervie Donside Aberdeenshire Scotland taken from the Burnhervie Road at Coldwells looking westwards on the road past Fetternear either for Kemnay or continuing on to Monymusk crossing the River Don. Although the town is now bypassed for the main route north to Huntly and Inverness it is still the hub for one of the main routes north to Banff and is an expanding commuter location for Aberdeen itself with road and railway connections. This photograph was taken in 2002 the last year I used slide film, either 35mm or 645 as my main medium for landscape photography. It is still representative of the general countryside despite their age and is chosen because of the lovely light and colours as it can still be on the right day.
