This huge prone lion figure with a human face faces the east to the rising sun and the modern day Cairo and is a very popular destination for the thousands that visit the Giza plateau and here viewed from the most accessible point on causeway from Khafre Pyramid to his Valley Temple. Here the famous 'Dream' Stele is taken using a 300 mm telephoto from the road to the Great Pyramid and as close as one can get without going into the enclosure. Luxor Merenptah Temple EG075300jhp Egypt Mudbrick Temple Merenptah Ramasseum roadside West Bank Luxor pylon, an Egyptian Pharaoh who reigned around 1212-1202BC, son of Ramasses 11, is on the West Bank of the Nile at Luxor and this photo was taken from the main West bank road looking towards the River Nile and with the Ramasseum towards the extreme left. A new museum and some excavated parts of his temple were opened in 2005. It is a mixture of open air and covered museum exhibits with some remains of the temple area with column bases. Some of the coloured wall reliefs are exquisite and because of the natural light available were easily photographed despite being inside. There is also a replica of the famous Israeli Stele, the original being in the Cairo Museum. This is a visit that would have to made outwith the usual West Bank package tour although easily arranged and is easily found next to the Ramasseum. Migvie Cross Slab jkl9300jhp Migvie Stone Cross-slab Aberdeenshire Pictish Christian symbol carved ancient Scottish relic stands in the kirkyard of Migvie Church and is easily accessible for the casual visitor. It is thought to date from the 9th century AD with a mixture of Pictish and early Christian symbols carved on gneiss stone, 2 metres high, similar to that at Kinord but held to be of inferior quality. The interlaced filled cross appears crudely squeezed into the stone but has interesting circular projections at the top, suggestive of something hanged. There are also iconic symbols carved into the angles of the cross, namely horseshoe, V-rod, double disc, Z-rod and a pair of shears as well as a horse and rider. Photo of the super blue moon, second full moon in August was taken on evening of 31st August at 21.39BST using a Nikkor AF-S 28-300 mm zoom lens on a tripod with a cable release as the exposure time was 1/200sec at 11 with an ISO of 200. This is not what would be deemed astronomical quality but gives the false impression it is bigger than it is as so close to a natural foreground whereas a few hours later it will appear much smaller high in the night sky-in fact it is exactly the same size in reality. This was taken the evening of the fullest moon-the last time this close and as 'big' was 1948. It is all relative to the beholder and certainly other full moons appear much the same-taken as it clears the hill top as gives more of a sense of scale. Photo of the super blue moon, second full moon in August was taken on evening of 30th August at 21.48BST using a Nikkor AF-S 28-300 mm zoom lens on a tripod with a cable release as the exposure time was .3sec at f8 with an ISO of 2500. This is not what would be deemed astronomical quality but gives the false impression it is bigger than it is as so close to a natural foreground whereas a few hours later it will appear much smaller high in the night sky-in fact it is exactly the same size in reality. This was taken the evening of the fullest moon-the last time this close and as 'big' was 1948. It is all relative to the beholder and certainly other full moons appear much the same-taken as it clears the hill top as gives more of a sense of scale. Big Moon bnm5845jhp Scottish super full moon November 2016 closest perigee Torphins Deeside looking from Ord Fundlie to Learney Hill above Torphins Torphins in Aberdeenshire, North East Scotland about 25 miles west of Aberdeen. Using a 300 mm zoom lens fully extended on a tripod with a cable release as the exposure time was .4 of a second at f8 with an ISO of 640. This is not what would be deemed astronomical quality but gives the false impression it is bigger than it is as so close to a natural foreground whereas a few hours later it will appear much smaller high in the night sky-infact it is exactly the same size in reality. This was taken the evening after the fullest moon when less cloud let it be visible-the last time this close and as 'big' was 1948. It is all relative to the beholder and certainly other full moons appear much the same-taken as it clears the hill top as gives more nof a sense of scale. Corse Castle Scotland asd5300jhp Corse O'Neil Castle fort imposing height upwards exterior tower spring ruin is located off B9119 Tarland road-take O’Neil Corse turnoff for a few hundred yards and is best viewed from road as very overgrown with stinging nettles and is not in good structural condition for exploring. Photograph shows exterior from the southern approach aside the adjacent pond and steep bank giving an increased sense of height and making it seem very imposing. Still in Forbes family, probably built around late 1580’s by Patrick Forbes, Bishop of Aberdeen from 1564-1663. Fairly traditional Z-Plan tower-house of the area and in a state unlikely to be restored. This particular image shows exaggerated converging verticals because of the closeness of the lens and despite it being an ultra wide focal length for given the situation of the castle to steep slopes it is not possible to get far enough away. The effect although not accurate or truth does increase the sense of height and scale. Photographs taken in the mid 90's mainly for the AA Publishing & Ordnance Survey Highland and Islands Guide book using transparency film covering the Highlands of Scotland from Inverness, northwards through Easter Ross to Wick and Thurso, along the Northern Coast, down the West Coast, including the Islands of Skye and Mull. Other material included was gathered for other AA Publishing Guides including Shetland, Pitlochry and Tayside. New photographs are now included from 2012 book commission travels in Angus, Perth, Kinross, Trossachs and Tayside.

The harbour has a long history of supporting trade across the North Sea with my own forebears working in the wood shipping trade in the 1800’s. A WW2 airfield of note with contemporary museum, beautiful beach, strong academic history, golf course and many other attractions on offer. The basin at Montrose, a tidal inland lake is rich with bird life especially as a roosting area for geese in the winter months. This view is from the railway station on the main east coast line from Aberdeen to Edinburgh and further south to London. Passing behind the Lodge you join the path up to the waterfall and which is another route to reach the plateau surrounding Lochnagar. It is another enjoyable walk returning to the south of the Lodge and skirting round the top of Loch Muick, returning to the Spital Carpark via the Blackburn. The Spital is also the starting off point for the walk to Lochnagar Mountain via the Gelder and Saddle. The Lecht ski centre is also one of the busiest centres on the south side of the Cairngorms during Scotland’s often ill-defined and variable winter season but during the summer months is a favourite route with the famous humpbacked single track bridge at Gairnsheil, the purple flowering heather moorland between there and Cock Bridge, past Corgarff Castle and then after Tomintoul, the Bridge of Brown, after passing through Glen Avon. This 13th Century building was later remodelled in 16th century, with this fine Scottish medieval door and has a very beautiful sacrament house on the inside, styled like a monstrance and inserted in a lancet window - now covered by clear roof to protect it. Next to it is spectacular Craig Burn Den or gorge with large woodland of mature beech trees.
