Aurora Borealis or Northern Lights displays photographed taken over Aberdeeshire in Scotland since 1989 covering some 350 events with arc, rays, coronas with a wide rnage of shapes and colours
Deeside Aurora 2015 vbn1737jhp Aurora Borealis December Jim Henderson photograph green arc Deeside Aberdeenshire taken on the 31st December, 2015 at Crooktree, 25 miles west of Aberdeen caused over the UK from a glancing CME and a timely end to the year gift given that the previous three displays I missed because of cloud cover. This photo was taken at 23.31UT with the ARC a precursor to the active phase of the evenings display which starting with rays breaking off the arc. This photograph was taken with a Nikon D700 full frame DSLR using a 24mm Nikkor f2.8 lens at f4 and ISO setting of 3200 with an exposure time of 12 secs. This is taken looking due North and the green tinge is from low level oxygen gas at Crooktree, located between Torphins to the right and Craigton Hill and Kincardine O'Neil to the left. Aswan Qubbet el-Hawwa EG052737jhp Egypt Aswan River Nile bluff tombs Qubbet el-Hawwa Dome feluccas reeds on the West Bank of the River Nile viewed from the berth of the M/S Nile Romance on the northern end of the Corniche on the outskirts of Aswan and it is near here that one can get a local public ferry to cross over to the bluff and after a steep climb explore the Tomb-Chapels of the Nobles, former Governors of Aswan. The building silhouetted is the Dome of the Wind, the Qubbet el-Hawwa, resting place of a Muslim Sidi Ali. Luxor Temple Stele EG074737jhp Luxor Temple Egypt avenue sphinxes stele granite carving hieroglyphs Nectanebo located alongside the Avenue near some of the small shrines part of this important temple located on the east bank of the River Nile at Luxor, Egypt. Luxor Temple is credited to Ramses 11 as the main builder and these are his massive granite statues at the entrance to the first pylon. Facing the pylon is the long Avenue of Sphinxes attributed to Nectanebo 1 which went completed would have joined up with Karnak Temple and recent reclamation work had established much of this avenue running through the town. Abu Rawash Pyramid eg076737jhp Egyptian Abu Rawash pyramid 4th Dynasty Djedefre rocky outcrop natural hillock this site is situated north west of Giza this site on high ground near the village of Abu Rawash and has the remains of a pyramid ascribed to the Pharaoh Djedefre, the successor to Khufu both of the 4th Dynasty around 2500BC. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Accessed through commercial forest it requires some walking through rough ground and after recent clear felling the ambience of this photograph has been removed. An early transitional phase after recumbent stone circles with possible evidence of a cist burial lid lying in the centre foreground; it was excavated in 1904. Crathes Castle Gardens asd8737jhp Crathes Castle Gardens Double Herbaceous flowers mauve Banchory Royal Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland summer view of this historic property and the building dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Open to the public and offering tranquillity as well as home made produce from jams to polish and famous for its stained glass work, it is located near Elgin on an Elgin to Rafford sideroad. It has been covered in this huge Perspex canopy to stop the weathering that is caused by modern acid rain.
