In both cases the approach is by motorboat being located on an island which is impressive with the pylon facing the landing berth and a large flight of steps. On the left is a small Roman kiosk called Qertassi dedicated to the Goddess Hathor and at the rear of the main temple is a small temple of Beit el-Wali from Ramasses 11 period carved out of a rock face although again relocated from near the original site of Kalabsha, some 40 km upstream on the banks of the original River Nile. All these three sites would have been flooded following the creation of Lake Nasser after construction of the Aswan High Dam in the 1960s. In this first visit in 2000, the arrival was from the Nile cruiseboat and they anchored along the rocky shore rather than the main stepped landing. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Castle Fraser is a National Trust for Scotland property situated about 16 miles west of Aberdeen and is open to the public all the year round. This building dates from between 1575 and 1636 is the “most elaborate z-plan castle” in existence in Scotland today and was the work of two master masons or builders called Bell and Leiper. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Spey Bay Beach TO3367440JHP River Spey Estuary Bay Beach Moray Firth Waves Action Photo Shingle near the villages of Garmouth and Kingston, small fishing hamlets amongst the shingle banks of this Morayshire north coast looking eastwards towards a distant Buckie and The Bin hill outline. Garmouth has the historical link with the landing of Charles 11 in 1650. The shingle banks along the mouth of the Spey are ever changing owing to longshore drift with the constant threat of the river outlet being closed and the area is known for salmon netting at the Tugnet spit as well extensive bird life. On approaching the saddle above the lochan and looking across at the summit of the mountain range, the Meikle Pap is small climb to the right and does give useful views across the whole front of the mountain and the opportunity from its boulder scree field for foreground interest to create a sense of 3 dimensional depth. This point is an approximate 2-2.5 hours walk from the carpark on well defined track to the Foxs Well and thereafter a conservation constructed pathway.
