These photographs are a mixture of natural light time-exposures and some using the rare opportunity to light with flash, given the go-ahead by the custodian. They were taken in JPEG’s whereas today I would always use RAW files and having the advantage of a tripod I would always use natural or even mixed light where possible thus avoiding flash hot spots; flash incidentally does not cause damage to the paintings despite many such claims and restrictions. Photos of the main towns and villages along the River Dee from Banchory westwards to Braemar with villages bordering the north and south sides of the river such as Torphins and Tarland to Strachan on the south.
Blackhall Castle Gates xvv1200jhp Banchory Blackhall silver granite gates castle fishing lodge Deeside summer is located just before crossing the road bridge over the River Dee into Banchory coming from the south. This large Deeside town on the River Dee some 18 miles west of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It has always been a main visitor centre either for day trippers from Aberdeen or the usual flow of coaches and other visitors heading from Aberdeen westwards to Braemar and from there south to Perth or north to Inverness. It is also offers a very scenic route southwards over the Cairn O’Mount to Mearns. The gates are all that remains of the castle, demolished after WW2 but now serves as a fishing lodge and entrance to the fishing beat alongside the River Dee on the south bank extending westwards. Although the gates tend to be locked it is not ‘private’ land and should be accessible as a riverside walk in terms of the Land Reform [Scotland] Act 2003. Now more prominent than usual as the area around this imposing granite monolith has been clear felled. There is a slight rough layby by the roadside allowing access up a grassy path amongst broom and heather. The monument was erected in 1951 by the Deeside Field Club to commemorate the Battle of Corrichie of 1562 between the forces of Mary Queen of Scots lead by the Earl of Moray who beat those led by the Gordon’s of Huntly, in several battles between the Reformation and a possible Catholic resurgence. Inscribed on the stone in Gaelic are “Cuimhnichibh La Coire Fraoichidh” translated as Remember the Day of Corrichie. Although Queen Mary is claimed to have sat and watched the battle she was in fact in Aberdeen and both the ‘Queens Chair’, a granite outcrop on Berry Hill and Queen Mary’s well are probably fictional creations. Craigievar Beating Retreat 71931JHP Craigievar Castle Pipeband Bagpipes Kilts Drum-major Beating Retreat Scottish Aberdeenshire event on National Trust for Scotland property is situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round. This was an occasional event by a local pipeband beating retreat at the close of the season. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.
