Aswan Souk Sunshades EG053083JHP Aswan Southern Egypt Souk Bazaar street traders sunshades sunny photograph near the promenade in this area full of colourful street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Aswan Nubian Museum Figurine EG052970JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum figurine of post Christian period and charming exmaple of mnay exhibits in this modern building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Boy King Lotus EG1179JHP Egyptian Cairo Museum young Pharaoh Tutankhamun head lotus flower photo was found in his Luxor tomb and is now in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

River Nile Esna Traders EG052058jhp Egypt Egyptians Nile Esna cruise traders boats selling shawl carpet boy photo taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation, although an additional one was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. Luxor Tomb EG942813jhp Egypt Egyptian Luxor Tutankhamun Theban hill mountain Valley King Tomb entrance stairs looking into one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation and this one if the most famous. It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors.
