New Byth bnm2891jhp New Byth village Buchan Aberdeenshire Scottish May spring rolling fields seeded near Cuminestown was built around the late 1700’s as part of a process by the landowners to support the increased agriculture of this northern area of Aberdeenshire. The Buchan province whose name means “land at the bend in the ocean” was underdeveloped but was developed as part of the enlightenment as landowners sought to improve their estates and the overall agriculture of the land. Nearby Cuminestown was one of the first founded in 1761 by Joseph Cumine and New Byth followed soon afterwards and later followed by other Central Buchan villages like Maud, Mintlaw and New Deer. Deeside Way Summer xvv1352jhp Potarch Deeside Way River Dee broom flowering yellow path Scotland summer walking bythe river after leaving the new public carpark by the Potarch Bridge at this well known crossing point over the river from the North Deeside Road between Banchory and Kincardine O’Neil for heading eastwards to Feughside up this Road via the Shooting Greens and past Slewdrum Community owned woodland or south to join the southern route from Aboyne to Finzean. In the summer the riverbank can be mobbed with picnickers and swimmers while it is also a popular salmon fishing stretch and the narrow turbulent water good for canoeing. This stretch of the Deeside Way has been recently completed and adds another piece to the public footpath network running from Aberdeen west along Deeside to Ballater.
