Aswan Souk Spices EG053071JHP Aswan Egyptian Souk Bazaar colourful spice baskets containers colours display near the promenade in an area full of colourful street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. In the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. This photograph is near the four papyrus bud columns on the outside Festival Hall of Thutmose 111 towards the north eastern corner. The hall was constructed next to one of the oldest areas of Karnak Temple. This is a complex mix of columned hall, chapels, magazines which are not represented in these photos; this area is described as Akhmenu by the ULCA Digital Karnak Archive but not mentioned a such in any other guide books although it does mean festival Hall per se. This area covers, the Hall of Ancestors containing an extensive king’s list, the famous botanical garden suite with plants found on his military campaigns into Palestine, a shrine for the underworld God Sokar and beyond the remains of a stand of beautiful papyrus columns described as the Colonnade of Tuthmosis 111 and other parts such as The Temple of the Hearing Ear, a sort of public area where offerings and prayers could be made to Amun; the inner sanctum being inaccessible to all but the priests and pharaoh. Luxor Queens Valley EG9647928jhp Egyptian Luxor West Bank Thebes Valley Queens approach querns hills rocks is the lesser known and visited burial necropolis on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor in which some Royal burials of this ancient civilisation of Pharaohs wives are contained as well as wives of important officials. Certainly one of the most beautiful is that of Queen Nefertari [66], restored by the Getty Institute and is not always open. Entry is by limited special permission and substantial entrance fee. I did have the chance to see it for a very limited time and of course no photography was allowed but it was an awesome experience, almost akin to be being in a Disney cartoon rich in colour. The usual tombs visited on a package visit are Queem Tyti [52], Prince Amun-hir-Khopshef [55] and Prince Kha’emweset [44]. Amenemhet Pyramid Lisht eg00914jhp Egyptian el-Lisht ancient pyramid Amenemhet 1 Fayoum Middle Kingdom mound enclosure wall is one of the later built lower grade constructions from c1970BC situated 2km from his sons’, Senwosret 1, a uninspiring mound. Amenemhet’s construction was found to contain fragments and blocks from Saqqara and Giza pyramids and complexes thought to have been incorporated for spiritual reasons rather than stealing them. Situated near a canal, an offshoot of the Nile it is possible that construction material was transported by water. Little is left of his mortuary temple and the valley temple accessed by a causeway is under ground water level. Mastaba’s and 22 tomb shafts for the royal harem were found on the west side. Amenemhet’s construction was found to contain fragments and blocks from Saqqara and Giza pyramids and complexes thought to have been incorporated for spiritual reasons rather than stealing them. Situated near a canal, an offshoot of the Nile it is possible that construction material was transported by water. Little is left of his mortuary temple and the valley temple accessed by a causeway is under ground water level. Mastaba’s and 22 tomb shafts for the royal harem were found on the west side. This photo is of one of these shafts-apologies for the exposure on the foreground but one of the problems of slide film in the field, however the important part the construction of the shaft is shown clearly. Luxor Tomb EG942813jhp Egypt Egyptian Luxor Tutankhamun Theban hill mountain Valley King Tomb entrance stairs looking into one of the most visited places in the world probably and certainly in Egypt beneath the Theban mountain on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor famous for some of the most important Royal burials of this ancient civilisation and this one if the most famous. It is in some ways relatively disappointing as against some of those larger tombs with long descending tunnels, descending rapidly into something akin to a concrete garage with only the one room decorated and containing a coffin under a glass cover in which the boy king's remains lie. It is busy tomb despite costing extra and in which photography is not allowed-absolutely! Although I suspect a few mobile phone photos have been taken these days-in 1994 my first and only visit all cameras had to be left at the entrance. I am surprised now at how I was able to take this photo without a person in site-usually this entrance area is packed solid with visitors.
