Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Roof Cornice eg9621436jhp Dendara Temple exterior reliefs ancient Egypt cornice roof painted Ba souls is located north of Luxor and survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of reliefs on the inner roof cornices showing Ba birds and remains of the original white painted background. Today the preferred method for package tours for crossing the River Nile is by the new southern road bridge and then heading north and westwards towards the main ancient sites of the West Bank. The scene is also a reminder of the wealth that was the engine that created ancient Egypt because of the fertility bordering the River Nile caused by the annual inundations with the flood waters depositing fertile mud giving abundant food sufficient to feed the large transient labour force required to build these huge monuments from Giza, Memphis, Thebes and southwards to Abu Simbel. Today fertilisation of the river farmland is by artificial means and of course has an impact on the Egyptian import bills. Egyptian Painted Cornice EG051863JHP Deir el-Medina Temple Interior Frieze Painted Carved Blue Red Colours Egypt Luxor is located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor lies to the west of Qurnet Murai hill and is the location of a workman's village with the remains of houses, streets and to the north a Ptolemaic Temple and other chapels. The temple is inside a mudbrick enclosure wall with good example of pan bedding and its large walls are obvious when looking over the village from the entrance. The small Temple to Hathor has some beautiful decorations, is a peaceful and spiritual place as usually free of crowds, is pleasingly compact compared to the overwhelming temples nearby and has managed to survive almost intact from Ptolemaic times. Some of the interior photos are border line for quality as the light was poor and tripods, and of course, flash are not allowed. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.

Granted to the Irvine family by Robert the Bruce has been under their care from 1323 to 1976, including Forest of Drum, a royal hunting park and the Old Wood with ancient oaks, geans and Caledonian Pines.
