Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.
Dendara Iseum Decoration eg985413 Dendara Temple detail netcher ancient Egyptian Isis birth Iseum photo is located north of Luxor and survives as one of the finest examples of the Late Period and the main buildings visited today date from fourth century BC in to the Roman period. It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of reliefs on outside of the rear wall of the small temple of Isis with a freize of netcher figures, seated Gods and above a series of Hathor faces and atributed to the Emperor Augustus. Tut Gilded Shrine EG11719JHP Egyptian Museum Exhibit Tut canopic vase Golden shrine stucco uraeus freize from Tutankhamun tomb in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Interior photography is difficult as flash and tripods are not usually allowed and interior lighting can be poor and gives inaccurate colour balances. Although we travelled First Class and the seats were undoubtately some of the most comfortable I had had on a train the toilets were probably the worst I have ever experienced anywhere and given the importance of tourism to Egypt and the huge pool of labour available this was an unacceptable lack of standards. It is also thought to have held some of the contents of the ancient Library after its sacking after the fall of the House of Ptolemy but nothing now remains of this smaller library probably sacked during the Fifth Century AD by Christian zealots. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. The amphitheatre could accommodate 800 seated on 13 rows of grey and white marble seats and once had a domed roof, now long gone except for a few columns that once supported it. Nearby are the remains of a Roman bathhouse and nearby piscina which when I was there were still being excavated. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
Silsila Riverside Shrine EG052414JHP Egypt Egyptian Ancient Silsila Nile Shrines Ramasses Cobras Freize Photo stands out sharply as the river narrows at the cult location north of Aswan and a well known marker for the Nile cruises as one nears or leaves the ancient marshland known as the Kom Ombo Basin. Nearby the distinctive large rock a remnant of the ancient quarrying are three riverside shrines of Merneptah, Ramasses 11 and Sety 1 although the later and the landing berth have been badly damaged by earthquakes many centuries ago. Photo is slightly soft and will need sharpening. Construction is with small bricks of fine white limestone giving this huge building a very delicate structure and aesthetic appearance. Still one of the highlights of any visit to Egypt, despite the wealth of fantastic places to see, and for me best enjoyed towards the evening when the site is often quiet and the face of the pyramid from the colonnade entrance is bathed in soft golden light.
