Egypt Aswan river Nile boys small boat paddling motorboats close friendly and part of a trip to visit an exhibition Nubian Village but passed by boats travelling to the cataract islands such as Seheil or on the traditional afternoon sail offered in most tour packages and one route for those visiting the Monastery of St Simeon. What is also important is the close awareness of the inhospitable nature of the cataracts, now benign because of the impact of the two dams across the river, but imagining these huge rocks in a Nile inundation and one could understand the barrier that it created for those travellers trying to head further south by boat.

There was a pleasant walk along the promenadewhere i met several students from the nearby University and chatted about soccer football and respective countries and it was also fascinating for the huge flocks of small birds that flew in to their roosting trees as evening closed in. We stayed in the Mercure Hotel Nefertiti, an aging hotel which had seen better days and it overlooked the newer chalet type complex called Hotel Aten.

Egypt > River Nile Cruise & Sites (2 files)

Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
