Aswan Souk Many Colors EG053101JHP Egypt Aswan Nile Souk Bazaar fabric dress shop multi-colored colours silk and located near the promenade in this srea which is full of colourful street stalls and shops selling clothing, perfume bottles, spices; toys; leather goods, jewellery as well as all the necessities of common day life for local Egyptians from food, fruit, meat, eggs to all the household wares that any large supermarket would stock. It is probably the most vibrant of all the Egyptian centres street shopping centres as it caters not for the tourist and is always busy as it runs adjacent to the main River Nile waterfront for a mile or so. Alexandria Street Scene eg9613730jhp Egypt Alexandria city back street scene people lorry modern houses apartments Mediterranean coast is no longer reminiscent of the ancient city from Pharaonic times and little of that ancient time remains. This photo is a snapshot of modern local street life taken from the taxi as I drove around the City on a day trip. A few isolated ancient sites can be visited with some Greco-Roman ruins and archaeology. The City has a distinctly European rather than Egyptian feel to it; it is sometimes offered as a day trip on a Cairo package but is seldom part of the main Nile packages. I hired my own taxi and the driver was sufficiently knowledgeable to take me to the main ‘ancient’ sites I could manage in a few hours. Photographs in this gallery show daily life along the River Nile mainly from the cruises I have undertaken over the past 10 years or so. Sites that border the Nile are included although the major temples visted have their own dedicated sites such as Edfu and Kom Ombo. One of the enjoyments of the Nile cruise is the tranquility of watching 'life go by' usually characterised by the friendliness of those you pass whether boatmen or farm workers as well as seeing wild birds close at hand. The other aspect is the service on the cruiseboats from friendly crews and the chance to relax after hectic and often crowded temple visits.
River Nile Cruiseboat EG052093jhp Egypt Egyptian River Nile Esna cruiseboat still life washing deck life ropes photo taken on the cruise from Luxor to Aswan and at the Esna Lock there was major congestion owing to only one lock in operation, although an additional one was being constructed. The cruiseboat offers a peaceful way albeit a busy one to see modern day Egyptian life that occurs along the banks of this historic major African river, while visiting ancient temples as well and which still plays an important part in the wealth of Egypt and in the lives of ordinary Egyptians today just as it has over the past 5000 years or so. This photo was taken in 2005 and will not represent the current situation with a huge drop in tourist numbers because of the Arab Spring and its aftermath. The traders made the most of the delays and stopped cruiseboats to throw their wares up to passengers, mainly galabeas, cotton goods and carpets with much interest and humour at the normal shouted haggling process. For those after serious galabeas then a better bet for quality and value for money was to wait for Edfu and even the souks of Aswan, although the process of dealing with traders helped pass the time waiting, could be several hours, to get through the lock to continue the journey south. One surprise was to find a Golden Ringed Dragonfly hanging from a buddleia early in the morning, no movement of any kind while I photographed it but it had gone 10 mins later when I came out again. Dragonfly bnm8984jhp Dragonfly golden ringed hawker cordulgaster boltonii wings eyes buddleia hanging Deeside Scottish summer photograph taken with a macro lenses as it appears to hang attached to the buddleia flowers possibly asleep or resting. It made no movement when I photographed it and when I blew gently on it remained completely still; I thought it had died and was stuck to the buddleia however after I returned a few minutes later it had disappeared. I checked the ground to see if it had fallen but it was no where to be seen. I had seen a large dragonfly flying the day before around the area although I was unable to get close enough to identify it. The main source of natural water is a small stream and there are some stagnant pools in the nearby forest where deep tyre tracks from tree harvesters had operated a few years before. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Entry into the walled garden is at the west side and the main path into the gardens is through the white borders and onto the path down the June Borders to the bottom of the walled garden where there is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border, the summer jewel resplendent with many colourful plants, with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Topiary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden. This photo was taken in the days of transparency film before digital was even a serious contender for recording these properties for the publishing market. Little has changed since this photo was taken except the distant rhododendrons which used to border the path coming down to the castle. Also it seems with climate change the days of deep snow are far less at the castle and Aberdeenshire generally. Crathes Castle Snowscene 151392jhp Crathes Castle Gardens croquet lawn topiary winter snow Deeside Aberdeenshire Scotland which offers a wonderful vista of this historic property which dates from the 16th century although the land belonged to the Burnett’s of Leys as a gift from Robert the Bruce in 1323. In the great hall is the Horn of Leys, supposedly a symbol of this grant. The tower house is one of the finest examples of the period and some of the original wall paintings still survive. Entry into the walled garden is at the west side and the main path into the gardens is through the white borders and onto the path down the June Borders to the bottom of the walled garden where there is a Doocot an attractive feature and useful high point for looking up the June Border, the summer jewel resplendent with many colourful plants, with the Castle as its impressive backdrop. Turning left at the main entrance leads to the Topiary Borders and Terrace, past the Camel Garden and climbing the steps enters the upper level with the Croquet Lawn and Lady Burnett or Upper Pool Garden. This photo was taken in the days of transparency film before digital was even a serious contender for recording these properties for the publishing market. Little has changed since this photo was taken except the distant rhododendrons which used to border the path coming down to the castle. Also it seems with climate change the days of deep snow are far less at the castle and Aberdeenshire generally. Craigievar Snow Track xv7645jhp Craigievar Castle Winter Snow Scenery Gate Field Track Over Hanging Trees in Aberdeenshire Mar district near to this National Trust for Scotland property situated about 6 miles south of Alford A980 and is open to the public from March to end of August although closed during 2008/9 for major renovation on the exterior it is open again as of 2010. Grounds are normally open all year round. Example of the best in Scottish Baronial architecture, dating from 1626, and is unspoiled since being relinquished to the NTS by the Forbes-Sempill family.
