Photos in this gallery are of Edfu Temple, one of the best preserved in Egypt, and usually the first first visit after leaving Luxor ona Nile Cruise.
Edfu Wall Carving EG0237JHP Edfu Temple Egypt Carving Pharaoh Goddess Crowns Hedjet Deshret Pschent in this large and almost intact building is located by the River Nile and is one of the main visits for most Luxor to Aswan cruise packages. One of the best preserved temples in Egypt this one is dedicated to the falcon God Horus and his granite likeness is probably one of the most photographed relicts in Egypt. Originally erected by Senwosret 1 it is mainly supplanted by the current Ptolemaic creation dating from 237BC, this particular part being started 116-71BC along with the present pylon. Karnak Saite Chapel EG0214017jhp Karnak Egypt Chapel Ankhnesneferibre gate Psamtik 111 hedjet crown Amun which is located inside the central enclosure wall of the Karnak complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Karnak Carved Wall EG074950jhp Karnak Temple Egyptian Sanctuary Wall Tuthmose Maat Palace Carving obelisk near the most sacred part of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This photo is situated near the sixth pylon on the outer wall of the inner sanctum around various chapels and shrines attributed to Amenhotep, Hatshepsut and Thutmose 111 leading to the central court area but this outer wall has important offering scnes and texts relating to Tuthmose's military campaigns into Syria and Palestine. Captured on this wall is Tuthmose offering gists to Amun such as two obelisks which had their pyramidions coverd in electrum but were eventually removed. This wall is described as the Palace of Ma'at on the UCLA Karnak website but not mentioned as such in either the Blue Book, Murnane or the touregypt sites. Just visible is the top of the obleisk of Hatshepsut. Karnak Fallen Obelisk EG074980jhp Egyptian Hatshepsut Amun embrace Horus Granite Fallen Obelisk Karnak carved is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. Queen Hatshepsut erected several Obelisks, one of the two remaining largest obelisks stands between the fourth and fifth pylons looking north in the Transverse Hall. The southern obelisk had collapsed and the main section of the top with the pyramidion is lying horizontally near the Sacred Lake and this is what is shown in this photograph. The obelisks were of red Aswan granite and the standing one is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Both encased buy a room covering them in done by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower sections remained largely intact but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Luckily this has been largely untouched and most of the carvings including Queen Hatshepsut are pristine as illustrated by this section with her and Amun in an embrace watched by the falcon God Horus in high quality carvings into this exceptionally hard stone. Karnak The White Chapel EG074913jhp Egyptian Karnak White Chapel Senwosret Museum Amun Min crowns hieroglyhs was one of the original and stars of the Open Air Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the River Nile at Luxor. As the oldest reconstruction at the site, dating from around 1970 -26 BC, testifies to one of the richest periods of craftsmanship in ancient Egypt, achieved perhaps because of the stability of his reign of over 30 years and is considered the peak of craftsmanship in the 12th Dynasty shown in some exquisite examples of jewellery found at Dashur. This area is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including one of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel and another from the reign of Thutmosis 1V, the Chapelle Rouge of Hatshepsut and a recent larger addition is the reconstruction of Thutmosis IV [Thutmose] Festival Court for a quiet, contemplative and beautiful experience to the busy main Karnak tour. Karnak Chapel Thutmosis 1V EG074908jhp Egyptian Karnak Thutmose alabaster Chapel Open Air Museum detail hieroglyphs was one of the original exhibits in the Museum in the Karnak complex on the East Bank of the Nile at Luxor. Ruling around 1400BC he is particularly known for the famous Dream Stele between the paws of the Sphinx. It is not usually part of the standard tour package so has to be entered ‘privately’ and an additional ticket purchased on entry, accessed from the First Forecourt through the eastern gate past the famous standing statue of Ramses 11. Passing through an area full of stored blocks rescued from other parts of the Karnak site, you can view restored chapels including another of Amenhotep 1 alabaster barque chapel of whom little is recorded, who ruled around 1550-24BC and although his mummy was found in the 1881 royal mummy cache but this beautiful small chapel is one delightful reminder of his 25 year reign. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases. Thanks to the capability of the modern digital camera and adjustments in Photoshop reasonably accurate colours can be exhibited of tomb paintings lit by low level artificial light when tripods and flash are not allowed such as the head of Anubis. This was taken before the current ban on tomb photography was introduced when you could purchase a ticket to photograph in two tombs in 2002. Unfortunately most of the photos of the painting had to be taken through Perspex which diminishes their quality as it obvious in several cases.
