Aswan Nubian Museum Chapel EG052963JHP Aswan Egyptian Nubian Museum Chapel of Usersatet Viceroy of Kush during reign of Amenhotep 11 and was rock hewn beneath Qasr Ibrim in sandstone during 18th Dynasty. The figures represent l-r Goddess Satest, Amenhotep and Horus of Aniba and now housed in this modern air-conditioned building whose foundations were laid in 1986, opened in 1997 and organised through UNESCO. Very low artificial light makes general photography difficult as well as affecting accurate colour balance. This now appears to be the only museum in Egypt where photography is still allowed although it is not easy as the ambient lighting is extremely subdued for conservation reasons. Karnak Rough hewn Carving EG075051jhp Karnak Temple storage rescued carving restoration hieroglyphics rough nu niwt located on the transverse axis south from the main central area between the eighth and tenth pylons and the boundaries of Khonsu temple in this large site near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and it the largest religious complex on the Nile. The in fill from many Atenist temples has been removed particularly from the inside of the ninth pylon and much of the area around the eighth to tenth pylons is largely covered in various blocks of variously decorated stone all eventually waiting new homes in restored chapels such as that of Hatshepsut's Chapelle Rouge in the Open Air Museum. Abu Rawash Pyramid eg076744jhp Egypt Abu Rawash pyramid 4th Dynasty Djedefre rockcut entrance channel hewn bedrock this site is situated north west of Giza this site on high ground near the village of Abu Rawash and has the remains of a pyramid ascribed to the Pharaoh Djedefre, the successor to Khufu both of the 4th Dynasty around 2500BC. The pyramid was faced with granite and the burial chambers were set deep in the rock, in mastaba style, with evidence of a secondary pyramid, a nearby cult complex and a causeway over 1500m long leading to a valley temple in the Wadi Qarun. Heavily damaged by quarrying activities since Roman times to maybe modern Cairo buildings recent excavations are ongoing and some restoration of the site is underway. When I visited in 1996 it was difficult to get to and I was not allowed time to really explore the site. However I did get back in 2007 and was able to explore much more of the site, noticing considerable restoration especially around the Mortuary Temple and the Boat Pit. Amenemhet Pyramid Lisht eg00912jhp Egypt el-Lisht pyramid Amenemhet 1 Fayoum royal women tomb shaft deep Middle Kingdom collapsed enclosure wall is one of the later built lower grade constructions from c1970BC situated 2km from his sons’, Senwosret 1, a uninspiring mound. Amenemhet’s construction was found to contain fragments and blocks from Saqqara and Giza pyramids and complexes thought to have been incorporated for spiritual reasons rather than stealing them. Situated near a canal, an offshoot of the Nile it is possible that construction material was transported by water. Little is left of his mortuary temple and the valley temple accessed by a causeway is under ground water level. Mastaba’s and 22 tomb shafts for the royal harem were found on the west side. This photo is of one of these shafts-apologies for the exposure on the foreground but one of the problems of slide film in the field, however the important part the construction of the shaft is shown clearly.
