Images of two important sites north of Luxor near the River Nile but usually visted as an extra tour either by road or a day cruise.

It has a notable rare representation of the famous Cleopatra, some beautiful carvings and is relatively unscathed by the ravages of time, desecration and being dismantled for building materials. This photo is of reliefs on outside of the west wall of the main temple walking down to the sacred lake and small temple of Isis. Abydos Ramesses 11 Temple Painting 5403EG07JHP Temple Abydos Small Ramesses 11 hierogylphs Ancient Egyptian cattle deer fowl is a 10 minute walk to the NW of the main Sety 1 Temple at Abydos and although much smaller and completely uncovered, it is worth the walk and effort to see it for there are many high quality colorful painted reliefs which are easily accessible and a joy to behold. Probably covered as late as the Napoleonic exploration means the sun and exposure to the elements has not had long enough to destroy the colours completely something that will eventually happen. Royalty Free photos of exhibits from the Cairo Egyptian Museum taken before current bans with slide film in available light not to studio quality
Tut 2nd Coffin Base EG11728JHP Egyptian Museum Tut Exhibit base inlaid gold detail second gilded sarcophagus Tutankhamun in the prime antiquities collection in Cairo taken during visits between 1994 and 1996 when photography was allowed albeit without flash and tripod. None is of studio quality, being handheld with existing, usually extremely poor light and using slide film, pushed Fuji 400asa to get a suitable aperture and shutter speed. Most of the photos are from the Tutankahum exhibits while the rest are items that interested me as I explored this wonderful and extensive collection, requiring many more hours if not days and is only hinted at during the usual one or two hour visit made on a package tour. Karnak Hatshepsut Obelisk EG0214060jhp Egyptian Hatshepsut Granite carving Obelisk Karnak hierogylphics Osiride statue evening light is in the central area of this huge sprawling site located near Luxor City centre on the East Bank of the River Nile and Karnak is the largest religious complex on the Nile. This view of Queen Hatshepsut's Obelisk, one of two remaining standing obelisks, is in between the fourth and fifth pylons looking at its granite base. The obelisk of red Aswan granite is the third tallest standing in the world, weighs over 320 tons and stands nearly 30 metres. Encased by Thutmosis 111 who disapproved of his Aunt, his bid to remove her existence benefited us in that the lower section remained largely intact as can be seen in this photo but higher sections were defaced by Akhenaten some 130 years later. Karnak Saite Chapel EG0214016jhp Karnak Egypt Chapel Ankhnesneferibre cobra Wadjet lion face hierogylphics which is located inside the central enclosure wall of the Karnak complex at Luxor on the East Bank of the River Nile. It is a relatively ruined small temple lying near the exterior north wall of the hypostyle hall and the path to the Temple of Ptah and gate to Montu Temple in the North Enclosure. The area is a cluster of ruins and blocks in storage and is very seldom frequented so always quiet in the crowded times. On the day I visited we had very poor light conditions caused by an encroaching sand storm and it was very overcast so apologies for the quality of these few images; one day I hope to return and get them in better light. Interesting in this photograph are the lion faced Wadjet Cobras which are very much a Delta Goddess diety. The chapel is dedicated to the Princess Ankhnesneferibre, daughter of Psamtik 11 and his Queen Takhut and she became successor to Nitocris the Divine Adoratice and later God’s Wife of Amun, High Priest and effectively ruled Thebes for nearly 60 years during the later Saite Period of Rule over Egypt; started in Dynasty 24 and centred on City of Sais in Northern delta region. Turbulent times however and she was in effect the last to hold this position for around the time of her death Psamtik 111, after a very short reign, was defeated by the Persian’s and the 26th Dynasty came to an end in 525BC. Kom Ombo Temple EG052483JHP Kom Ombo Ptolemaic Temple Ancient Egyptian God Osiris Crown Atef carving on the River Nile just north of Aswan and a regular visit on all Nile Cruises, was principally built by Ptolemy V of Silsilah sandstone. Dedicated to two Gods – Sobek, the crocodile and Horus, the falcon and although it has been damaged over the years, mainly through slipping into the River Nile and some structural damage owing to earthquakes, there are still some wonderful colourful reliefs of the most detailed and delicate style. Luxor Hatshepsut Obelisks EG962093JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Exhibit Carved Block Hatshepsut Obelisks Karnak Amun was taken inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. This particular exhibit shows the Queen on the left and Amun on the right with two standing obelisks at Karnak one of which still stands and is similiar to blocks now in the reconstructed Chaple Rouge while this one is in the museum proper and was taken in 1996 when you could pay to take photographs but not use a tripod, now not allowed at all, and I used Kodak 5042 Tungsten Slide film which still meant hand holding was at the extremes of useful photography in low light conditions. Luxor Museum Hieroglyphs EG051949JHP Egypt Museum Luxor Cache Amenhotep Statue Rear Interior Photograph Hieroglyphs was photographed inside this modern building on the waterfront of the River Nile with its fascinating collection covering the extensive history of ancient Egypt including items from the Tomb of Tutankahum. These particular exhibits are in an annex displaying statues discovered in 1989 in a storage pit and called The Luxor Temple Cachette of which the red quartzite life size statue of Amenhotep 111 is one of the finest pieces of carving yet found in Egypt. Habu Wall Hierogylphs EG053424JHP Medinet Habu Temple Ancient Egypt Wall Hieroglyphs Pylon Addition Construction located on the West Bank of the River Nile at Luxor and a complex of temples is now dominated by the mortuary temple of Ramasses 111. Apart from being in excellent condition generally, it offers much to see including some beautiful and detailed reliefs, the best coloured are in the second court and especially its scale and trying to understand its many later additions. Not usually included in most standard tour packages, this temple is worth the effort to be visited privately. The most complete is Old Kingdom Dynasty V King Sahure c 2480BC conforming to Fourth Dynasty plans and I was able to access the site in 1995 and took this amongst other photos. However after that the site was closed during visits up to 2005 while undergoing considerable excavation I understood so much more might now be visible assuming access of allowed. Near Memphis and the Saqqara entrances it was approached through the village of Abu Sir. Generally poorly constructed as in the twilight of the ‘Pyramid Age’ and when the centralised power of the crown declined, the remains although in a poor state of repair there were some fascinating remains such as a beautiful carved red granite column with sharp carved bas reliefs, channels for a drainage system, examples of highly skilled carving of granite blocks and shaped bowls thought to be for collecting blood from sacrificed bulls. Sehel Island, Seheil Island on the River Nile amongst the cataracts near Aswan has a real Nubian village walked through to reach the large quantity of rock carvings on the boulder strewn island many of which are included in these photographs
Seheil Rock Carvings EG052624JHP Seheil Island Rock Carving Egyptian Figure Hierogylphs Sekhem Scepter photograph on this island near Aswan amongst the River Nile cataracts. The main reason for this private excursion by motorboat was to visit the rock carvings which cover this boulder strewn part of the Nile recording many events throughout the ancient history of the Egyptian Empire spanning some 3000 years although most were made in the 18-18 Dynasties. Most were the work of officials, often before they went to Nubia or reporting their efforts on return. The most notable carving is the Ptolemaic Famine Stele which refers to a famine during the reign of Doser, famous for the Step Pyramid at Saqqara, some 2000 years before.
