Built mainly by Ramesses 111 and 1V but later additions by various kings including the Propylon Gate built by Ptolemy 111 from which an avenue of sphinxes leads to the Precinct of Mut, unfortunately closed to the public. The pylon was later decorated in place by the High Priest Pinedjem, later a King and the columned court inside is attributed to the King Herihor. The nicely decorated Temple of Opet or Apet, a Goddess hippopotamus deity who assisted women in childbearing and is located on the SE corner of the main Khonsu was mainly a Ptolemaic Temple and in practice dedicated to Amun who had by this time assumed much of the characteristics of Osiris. Like Khonsu itself is is well preserved, usually not very busy and a delightful escape from the crowded areas around the main Karnak site.
